5.0 out of 5 stars View of a Mother of Baseball Players
As a mother of two baseball players, one playing at the Division I college level, the other playing in high school, who are both looking to be drafted at some point in the future, this book was very helpful. I especially liked the section written by Darren Heitner, regarding the choices players make at the high school level deciding whether or not to go on to college and...

2.0 out of 5 stars Back where I started. Not exactly what I bargained for.
I bought this book as a gift for my brother who was looking for information on finding a new agent in the U.S and abroad, how to approach agents, how to find quality agents, information about affiliations, training/try-out camps etc. Unfortunately this book offers no information in that department. Instead it assumes you are being recruited from a college team, which is...

As a mother of two baseball players, one playing at the Division I college level, the other playing in high school, who are both looking to be drafted at some point in the future, this book was very helpful. I especially liked the section written by Darren Heitner, regarding the choices players make at the high school level deciding whether or not to go on to college and receive the value from the college experience, or to go on to the pros after being drafted out of high school. As a mother and one who has followed my boys baseball, I am still uneducated as to how the whole draft process works and what agents do. However, this section by Darren Heitner, as well as the rest of the book, provides me with very solid information.

As I said before, I have two boys looking to be drafted in the future, does anyone know where I could get Darren Heitner's information so I could contact him as a possible advisor to my boys? He seems to really be in the business for young players best interests...

I bought this book as a gift for my brother who was looking for information on finding a new agent in the U.S and abroad, how to approach agents, how to find quality agents, information about affiliations, training/try-out camps etc. Unfortunately this book offers no information in that department. Instead it assumes you are being recruited from a college team, which is of little use to semi-professional athletes, or those who are well out of college.

If you're looking for semi-interesting anecdotes and examples of the business end of sports, check this book out of the libarary and give it a read. If you want specific or practical info to get you started or point you in the right direction this is not the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive look into the process of selecting a sports agent, March 19, 2010
By
As someone just starting my career in the sports industry, I found the book very interesting and informative. It is a great reference for coaches, players, agents, sports executives, and other sports enthusiasts. I will definitely refer to this book often throughout my career.

This book is a MUST for any athlete (their families and advisors) considering hiring an agent. At the University of Miami this book is given to every student athlete. The guide clearly laid out, with interesting real life examples, the potential pitfalls and decisions facing an athlete when selecting an agent. The process of selecting an agent is such a critical process since an agent plays a large role in the athlete's financial future. This is not a decision for athlete's to take lightly. The guide provided an in depth background into the agent selection process so an athlete can feel knowledgeable, prepared, and comfortable when faced with meeting and choosing an agent.

This book not only covered the major sports but also dedicated a portion to individual and Olympic sports which I found particularly interesting to learn the differences. Also, the guide includes sample contracts, historical salary information, and (my favorite) the Directory which has contact information for all sport leagues and associations in one place. These extras were a great tool to understand how professional contracts ACTUALLY work and how much athletes ACTUALLY get paid.

I felt the guide covered the A to Z of selecting an agent. I could not have been more satisfied with all of the interesting true stories, research and data provided. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in playing, advising, or working in professional sports.

I have always been interested in the sports buiness industry and wanted to gain more insight into the world of a sports agent. Upon recommendation from [...] writer Darren Heitner I purchased a copy of this book and found it to be very informative. It helps explain the industry to young athletes so they know what to expect when dealing with potential agents. I would consider this a must read for any athlete involved in collegiate sports or for anyone who hopes to work in the industry.
