I ordered these bars and my first impression was that they were amazing! In fact, I couldn't understand how these bars could be only 4 Net Carbs and contain just 1g of Sugar. It seemed too good to be true. And in fact, it is too good to be true. The bars gets their sweetness from Sugar Alcohols. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact, Net carbs are calculated by taking Total Carbs and subtracting Sugar Alcohols and Fiber -- reason being is that Sugar Alcohols and Fiber have a minimal impact on blood sugar.

However, not all Sugar Alcohols are the same, and the main Sugar Alcohol in these bars is Maltitol. Aside from Maltitol's side effects that can include gas, bloating, gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea, Maltitol just doesn't seem to be much better for you than sugar.

1) Maltitol does seem to impact blood glucose. And in fact, it provides 2 to 3 calories per gram vs. sugar's 4 calories per gram.

2) Maltitol has a relatively high Glycemic index, much higher than other Sugar Alcohols.

From what I've gathered, many people that have problems with their low-carb diets not being particularly effective can often point to Maltitol as a culprit.

It just seems to me that Maltitol is not a particularly good sugar substitute and that when manufacturers use it as an ingredient, the calculations of Net Carbs and Sugars are misleading, because the actual effect of Maltitol on blood sugar is not much better than sugar, and the whole point of low carb diets is managing blood sugar to control weight.

I purchased these bars as a convenient and tasty way to manage my weight. For years, I have enjoyed these as a snack -- great taste, great price, highly convenient. These taste like a chocolate bar so it satisfies my craving for sweets and hunger at the same time! I used this mostly as a meal replacement. In my opinion, it's equivalent to the fullness of a small meal IF YOU DRINK WATER WITH IT -- I don't get hungry again until about 2 hours later. It's also highly convenient as a quick meal on the go.

However, recently I've put myself on the strict induction phase, hoping to shed a few extra pounds for an upcoming party. For days, I went about carefully counting my carbs but I couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing more than the couple of pounds of water weight. Getting ketone strips confirmed that I wasn't in ketosis. Finally, after carefully reexamining everything I ate, I realized that these bars are questionable.

Here are nutrition facts from the label:
Calories 240
Total Fat 12g
Saturated Fat 6g
Protein 18g
Total Carbohydrate 22g
Dietary Fiber 10g
Sugar 1g
Sugar Alcohol 0g
(You can also confirm this on the Atkins website [...])

The way net carb should be calculate is
Total Carbohydrate - Dietary Fiber = Net Carb
So 22 - 10 = 12 net carbs

If you do a little interest research, you'll find forums that talk about this more in detail.

Eliminating these from my diet has finally put my body into ketosis. As I stated in the beginning, these are great tasting convenient bars to manage your weight but they're not appropriate for induction, despite what the Atkins website says.

This is the BEST low carb bar I have ever eaten. It literally tastes like a Baby Ruth. I have tried the brownie bar by atkins and the caramel chocolate peanut nougat bar by atkins along with a variety of other brands and this one is by far the best! Yummy.

As far as Amazon is concerned, this is the first time I have ever seen that their price is higher than elsewhere. You can buy the 5 pack at Walmart for less than $6 which is significantly less than the Amazon price.

What makes a low carb granola bar good? Taking a bite and not being able to tell that it is low fat, low carb, and high in protein.

These are moist, chewy, and packed with chocolate! Not only are there plenty of miniature chocolate chips inside the bar, but the bottom of the bar is chocolate coated. It makes for a quick, delicious, guilt-free breakfast. If you have a sweet tooth but cannot afford to eat the fat and calories in a pastry, grab one of these. It will satisfy your need for chocolate.

Are they filling? I find that if I eat one along with a glass of skim milk, I am full for 3.5 to 4 hours.

These bars taste very good, but the nutritional information listed in the Amazon product description is a mismatch with the product I received (May 2011). My bars indicate 9g total fat (not 8g), 6g of saturated fat & 30% DV (not 5g/21%), 7g sugar alcohol (not 0g), 10g protein (not 12g), 170mg sodium (less than the 210mg listed), 140mg potassium (not 110mg), 15% vitamin A (not 25%), 10% vitamin K (not 15%), 25% calcium (not 35%), etc. So if you were planning on including these bars in your diet plan based in part on the Amazon nutritional information, take this into account.

Flavor Name: Cookies n' CremeSize Name: 1
We have tried about 4 different Atkins meal bars and like the cookies n' creme better than the other ones that we have tried. Actually, they are very good. However, the net carbs nutritional info is very misleading. If they used a sugar substitute that had a low glycemic index and low Cal/g then it would be honest. The problem is that they use a sugar substitute, maltitol syrup, that has the highest GI and Cal/g of the normal sugar substitutes.

How bad maltitol is depends on the form that is used. Table sugar has a GI of 60 and has 4 Cal/g. Maltitol syrup is 52 and 3, while maltitol powder is 36 and 2.7 according to one study. For comparison, sorbitol is 9 and 2.5 and mannitol is 0 and 1.5. Different studies vary, but have the same trend. Atkins bars use the syrup form of maltitol, which is not much better than sugar, especially since it has only 75% the sweetness of sugar. I eat the cookies n' creme for 2 reasons. First, I like it the best and it is the highest in fiber and the lowest in maltitol. From this information, it appears that the nutritional info is very misleading, if not outright fraudulent. I will still eat cookies n' creme, as most other bars are just as bad or worse as far as sugar goes, but Atkins needs to be honest as to the real net carbs. They are basically 10, as opposed to the advertised 3 for the cookies n' creme. I give it 4 stars because it's still better overall than most everything else, Atkins or otherwise. However, I would only rate the other Atkins bars that we have tried as 3 star at best.

Note: Some of the Atkins bars don't list the form of maltitol used, so some might use the powder form, which is somewhat better than the syrup.
