Musical Leftovers Make A Fine CD Treat,
This review is from: Atl 40th: Pop 1958-1977 (Audio CD)
To celebrate its 40th anniversary in 1988, Atlantic Records and its labels released a series of box sets, best-ofs and various artist compilations covering its greatest success areas: rock (a 4CD box), soul (an exhaustive, delightful 7CD series), jazz, blues, etc. But what of the assorted pop hits that didn't land into a genre? That's what spurred this collection of Atlantic's label's biggest radio hits from its first 40 years. The set cuts across music genres even among artists. Bobby Darin slides from the catchy but silly "Splish Splash" to the big band swing of 1959's "Mack The Knife" (in one year!) Stephen Stills attacks social infidelity (with Buffalo Springifeld in 1967's "For What It's Worth"), then encourages sexual infidelity (in 1970's faux gospel-soul "Love The One Your With.") The Rascals slap at a soul classic (1966's #1 "Good Lovin'"), then float on a Afro-Cuban breeze in "Groovin'." You get blue-eyed soul from Dusty Springfield and Average White Band, Robert John's note-for-note 1972 remake of "Lion Sleeps Tonight," Brownsville Station's black-leathered "Smokin' In The Boys' Room," and two exceptionally late Seventies hits from Hot and England Dan/John Ford Coley. Together, it forms yet another CD label compilation more fun and convienient than gathering 45s. Recommended, with its best tracks essential only on the original artists' full albums.

I like this tape. I used to have a CD but it got lost and this is a fairly good substitute.

I have actually had this CD for a while and I brought it to work the other day. WOW, what a mistake....I had people coming in my office all day wanting to know where I found it. They absolutely loved it. A MUST for Baby Boomers. I share an office with a 23 year old and she also liked it. Probably one of the greatest.
