Though this shelf was serviceable in the end, almost in spite of itself, personally I'm disappointed with it over all, and won't likely be purchasing anything else under the Atlantic/Oskar brand ever again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but misleading Ad, June 1, 2006

This is a great storage solution, very easy to setup, and offers plenty of storage. I actually had about 4 more shelves than I needed once I set everything up. Setup was a breeze, and only took about 20 minutes, and the instructions were too simple for you to make any mistakes! Every piece was CLEARLY labeled, and went together without ANY problems. The only problem with this item is the ad is misleading. It's advertised as Oak, when actually it's wood composit (a*k*a Beaver Puke) with an Oak Veneer. Overall I'm pleased with the product, I just wish it would have been honest about being Oak Veneered beaver puke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Similar to the O'Sullivan 40231, December 19, 2007

If you're looking for the O'Sullivan 40231 Media Storage Tower, which has been discontinued and is impossible to find, this is the closest you can get. It has the exact same dimensions and is assembled the same way. I have four of these, the adjustable shelves are great for arranging a variety of different-sized CD, DVD and video game cases. Easy to assemble with good instructions. All you need is a hammer and a phillips screwdriver. (An electric screwdriver/drill is recommended but not necessary.) Like other reviews have said, it is wood composite with a finish, and the lower shelves are only finished on the top and sides, since they're low enough that no one will be able to look up and see the unfinished side. I bought mine from Atlantic through Amazon and got fast delivery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for paperbacks, October 2, 2008

I bought several of these to create a library for my paperback books. "Regular" bookcases are designed for large hardbacks with deep and tall shelves. These with their narrow and adjustable shelves were just the thing, and the light (vinyl) finish reflects light and makes reading creased paperback covers easier than on a deep dark colored shelf.

I could wish the units were a little more stable. They come with wall anchors but my library is in a concrete basement so I have solved that problem by putting weighty things on the bottom shelf which also keeps my books away from the slim chance of water damage from a backed up drain.

I am a wimp. I found the 60# boxed units to be heavy but I managed with some creative sliding and shoving. It took me 90 minutes to assemble one unit, and another 15 to put in the shelves (and change my mind and move the shelves.) I did this with no power tools the first time but I was happier when I used a power screwdriver on the second.

For those who cannot afford the very rare hardwood shelves that are sized for paperbacks, these are pretty good alternatives.

2.0 out of 5 stars Passable, barely, November 3, 2009

Though this shelf was serviceable in the end, almost in spite of itself, personally I'm disappointed with it over all, and won't likely be purchasing anything else under the Atlantic/Oskar brand ever again.

First, the materials are of very low quality. This is constructed of laminated particle board. That's not really a surprise though. Most of this type of furniture is these days, unless you're willing to spend a small fortune on it. That said tough, there are degrees of quality even among "beaver puke" as other reviewers have called it, and this is constructed out of the lowest of the low.

Second, quality control is non existent. In some places the veneer is very roughly trimmed, leaving fringed edges. In other places it was torn. Luckily, it was in places covered by construction. There was a chunk out of the top corner, which is not really visible when it's against a wall. On one of the bottom inner shelf sections, only about half the sets of holes, which should have been in a line like this [::::::], were right. The others were all over the place. Had I noticed it before the shelf was assembled, it would have gone back to Amazon. It was just dumb luck that the holes for setting this shelf just for DVDs happened to be in the right place. Also, several of the little pins that were included for holding up the shelves were malformed. Like they didn't pour in enough metal when they were forged. But again luck was on my side, and there were far more than I needed.

I will give a little credit where it's due though. Where most manufacturer's use a cardboard backing, this used a hardboard backing. A significantly sturdier material, which did add a lot to the stability of this shelf.

Finally, the stats are a bit fudged. Used just for DVDs, you can make 18 sections, each of which can comfortably hold 19 DVDs. With just enough space remaining to easily slide the DVD you want off the shelf. This gives an effective total of 342. While technically, you can cram that 20th DVD in each section, for that 360 total it's very very tight, and not something you'll be doing if you care anything about the longevity of your DVDs/cases, or the shelf itself.

Clearance pricing, free shipping, and dumb luck, are the only reason this thing got two stars. There were just to many negatives. If I were you, I would look to a different brand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased, March 8, 2009

Very pleased with this storage unit. One of the easiest pieces of flat-pack I have ever built. Only quibble: it's not entirely clear how to orient the first set of "uprights" when you're putting them on the middle shelf piece (the first "putting together" you do). Easy enough to figure out if you're a flat-pack veteran, but might confuse first-timers.

Shelves cannot be arranged so all are equal-height and DVD-holding. You can fit 2-3 ranks of DVD shelves on the bottom and 3 ranks on the top. We use the extra (short) space for things like game controllers, but others may not like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect., October 31, 2008

The assembly instructions are straight forward and the parts are clearly labeled. While I generally don't like products that have you nail a cardboard backing to keep the assembled product from twisting, this unit has hardware to secure the top to the wall, which provides the needed stability, so you aren't relying solely on a cardboard sheet.

One caveat. When applying the cardbard to the back, the unit is lying face down and the base is deeper than the top. don't be tempted to lean on the unit since the joints between the top and bottom sections are not designed to be stressed in that direction.

Once assembled, it is quite sturdy for its intended use. The fact that it has three vertical sections and allows you to place shelves at different heights, gives the unit a much more "custom" appearance than units that simply have shelves running straight across.

If I ever run out of space, I'll definitely get another of these.

1.0 out of 5 stars not as pictured, August 14, 2011

This item, as pictured here, is not the Atlantic 38435065, but a cheaper, less stable version that Atlantic has started producing instead of the 38435065. The item pictured is actually the Atlantic 38435623. The Atlantic Oskar 38435623 has shorter shelf depths than the previous version. The lesser depth causes DVD's to stick out over the edge about an inch. This causes DVD's to fall off with the slightest bump or simply brushing by them. The shelves are also thinner than the previous model, and with a little time, they bow down in the center from the weight of the DVDs on them. This has caused shelves to actually detach from off the end pegs and crash into shelves below, thereby spilling all the DVDs on the floor. Unfortunately, the 38435065 is no longer being produced, as of 2010, by Atlantic- They have instead, decided to go with this cheaper, lighter weight product, that completely sucks.
