Any serious blues fan will dig this collection. Billy Vera, the compiler, and Rhino Handmade have put together a diverse, interesting, and well-balanced compilation.

However, I wouldn't recommend this as a "first buy" for casual listeners or people just beginning to build their music collections. You will get a lot more of the kind of tracks that create the foundation of a good collection on boxes like The Chess Box :Muddy Waters, Vee-Jay: The Definitive Collection, and Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974.

Bottom line: an outstanding set of rarities and deep vault tracks for anybody who wants to go beyond the mainstream compilations. One star off due to a good, but not great, liner-note book and a dull box design--neither is up to Rhino's usual high standards.

I got this because I was looking for the songs Hoy, Hoy, Hoy by Little Johnny Jones; and Hey Bartender, and When I Get Lucky by Floyd Dixon. I had these songs on a seventies Atlantic Blues collection on vinyl. I couldn't find these songs anywhere, then suddenly last summer, this new edition of Atlantic Blues from Rhino appeared, with those songs, and many more.

Listening to it, I've discovered more great songs, such as Alarm Clock Boogie, by Odelle Turner. Most of the songs I've never heard of, but I like them more each time I listen to them.

Rhino doesn't have any more of these in stock, it was a limited edition of 3000. So if your interested in this, you'd better pick it up while you still can.
