Just like everyone else says . . . a masterpiece! I had to punt on the baseball one, but #20 / Patchwork alone was worth the cost of this book. The cryptics always seem very fair, although also very challenging!

The Atlantic cryptic crosswords by Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon are particularly good. The quality of the clues is excellent, where just about every word contributes to the puzzle. If you can't get your fix from the Atlantic magazine this is a good substitute.

I have loved doing cryptic crosswords from the Times of London for years, but this collection is simply too full of the names of rivers and other British landmarks that it was impossible for me to complete any of the puzzles in here. I imagine they are fine for British citizens, ex-pats, and immigrants, but for we who are native Americans, these are frustrating.

Got this as a Christmas prezzie from my husband and was completely delighted! I found the clues semi-challenging (they don't rival The Times!), but the thematically-driven meta-puzzles in each item were the best part. Finished all 60 puzzles (save a scattering of blanks here and there that still have me stuck) in about a month and all I can say is 'please, sir, may I have some more?'

Save for a few clues (and I mean just a few) whose solutions didn't sit well with me, I regard the puzzles as clear, fair, and most definitely solvable IF

1. you love cryptics
2. you are persistent
3. you *really* want to be challenged
4. your cryptic skills are fairly polished (meaning extreme comfort with, say, the puzzles in The Telegraph, and middling comfort with those in The Times and The Guardian).

If these characteristics don't apply to you, please don't blame it on the puzzle collection.

The only negative observation I should add is this: the house might not get cleaned and dinner might not be on time for a few weeks. Or months.

This is a great collection of cryptic crosswords. I've bought this book several times to rework the puzzles throughout this years. Very enjoyable.

i am enjoying this book very much, but a warning to those shopping for good cryptics - this book is not a straight cryptic puzzle book since it has different types of puzzles within each puzzle. it is very challenging and I need to cheat every now and then to complete a puzzle successfully. but lots of fun anyway ...

Cryptic crosswords are hard to find so I was delighted to find this selection. I would recommend it to any other cryptic fans.

Got this for my uncle who is a crossword fanatic. Guess I overestimated his cerebral brand of intelligence, because after a week of 'A Beautiful Mind' style scrawlings and equations, he had filled in about 5 clues on the first puzzle. Now I feel like I am responsible for those wasted hours of his life ... :-(

If you're a genius, these seem pretty cool. Are the British really that much smarter than we Yanks??

I have LOVED working cryptic crossword puzzles for several years and am very comfortable doing most of them. However, this particular volume has been a complete disappointment and waste of money and time. The clues are very poor and do not follow the patterns of the introductory examples nor of other authors' examples that I have worked. Even looking at the answers I found that many of the clues still do not make sense nor follow an explanation. I completely regret purchasing this book.

I would not have bought this had I been familiar with what they meant by cryptic. The description provided is not helpful.
