This review is from: Atlantic Jazz Flutes (Audio CD)
Atlantic Jazz Flutes: Rhino R2 71637On this disc we get two tracks each by six top flute players of the influential 1960s and early 70s. One other thing they have in common is a love and mastery of the blues and instrumental jazz blues playing. Great but different!! Rahsaan Roland Kirk with Ain't No Sunshine is strongly vocalising and playing, and in A Laugh For Rory creates a beautiful, playful mood for his son. David Fathead Newman plays strong passionate tracks, building and developing classic solos in a funkier style. Next is Herbie Mann with bluesy versions of Memphis Underground and This Little Girl Of Mine- capturing the essence of his exciting jazz festival music. Yusef Lateef uses his strong but mellow flute colorfully in Nubian Lady and Stay With Me to create beautiful emotional tones in a way that enriches the jazz idiom. Hubert Laws with All Soul and If you Knew exhibits a different sensibility suggesting a jazz-classical fusion, and Charles Lloyd plays his hit Sombrero Sam along with Journey Within, following his own muse. Here we sense an exploration inspired by other classic asian flute traditions along with jazz, perhaps India or Arabia, and a more earthy sound. With these flute players are some of the best rhythm teams in music: several great players also making great music. It is an indispensable cd for listeners, players, and teachers wanting to open the ears of students to the quality and variety of classic flute jazz.
