This review is from: The Atlantic Turkey Shoot: U Boats Off the Outlet Banks in World War II (Paperback)
An interesting story of how the pre-war U-boats off the coast could just watch the convoys passing against the backlight of the island villages and pick their target. Surprising how unprepared the United States was at defending against U-boats and the roll the British played in getting America on track.
Imagine the U-boat captains watching people walking about or sitting on their porches and the tales they had to tell. The people of Ocracoke contributed first hand insight into life during those times as well. Complete with photograhs, this book is an excellent account of the battle off the North Carolina coast. Note the typo in the link to the book. It should read Outer Banks instead of Outlet Banks. |
