Book Description

April 12, 1985
For thousands of years before the beginning of recorded history -- the legends tell us -- a powerful civilization flourished in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This breathtakingly advanced island continent boasted splendid cities, golden temples, crowded seaports from which the far-reaching influence of Atlantis spread to the rest of the world, until its destruction in an overwhelming cataclysm.

Now, based on careful study of scientific undersea research, Charles Berlitz proves that Atlantis is not legend but fact -- and unravels a mystery even more startling than the Bermuda Triangle!

What message lies buried with the mighty stone structures deep beneath the Atlantic?
What profound revelations about Atlantis have come to us from beyond the Earth?
Was Atlantis destroyed in an ancient nuclear war?
What great centers of Atlantean culture yet await discovery?

5.0 out of 5 stars Most coherent theory about Atlantis available., April 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
This book gives excellent, comprehensive evidence for the existence of an island on the Midatlantic Ridge. Berlitz does not try to convince people of anything concerning the people or culture present on the island, but instead points out that the Ridge would have been above water during the last ice age and presents his evidence from there. Comparisons of languages on both sides of the Atlantic ocean for similar words, migratory paths of certain animals, archeaological anomalies, and an analysis of flood mythology from around the world are used to support the basic premise. Overall, it is a very good, very well researched book on an interesting topic. I have recommended it many times, not least because it stays away from anything vaguely related to channeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books available about the Atlantis theory, May 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
The facts presented in this book are disturbing, and should seriously be considered by the blind scientific community. If we claim Atlantis, whatever it was or wherever it really was, is just a fairy tale, we would be taking all the Ancient people for fools, because they generally say the same things, or very similar stories about it. The author didn't try to tell the reader to believe his hypothesis, but to think seriously about the *facts*. He didn't make up anything but his hypothesis, which is his own and he has very much the right to have it, especially when it's well supported. Overall, it's an excellent work on the world's most famous legend, and is definitely recommanded by yours truly. ^_^

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth is stranger than fiction, December 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
I needed a book for one of my classes and I happened to pick this one up. I thought it looked interesting and so I began to read it. I was astonished as the author, Charles Berlitz, made convincing arguments that Atlantis was real and not legend. I have had mythology and classical classes that made the same statements but it was left up to us to believe whether it was true or not. Berlitz demands that you look at his information and draw the same conclusion as he; that Atlantis truly existed. While I can't say that I totally believe I have a clearer picture and will definitely research it more. Maybe someday I will be writing a book that does prove that Atlantis existed.
