5.0 out of 5 stars Most coherent theory about Atlantis available.
This book gives excellent, comprehensive evidence for the existence of an island on the Midatlantic Ridge. Berlitz does not try to convince people of anything concerning the people or culture present on the island, but instead points out that the Ridge would have been above water during the last ice age and presents his evidence from there. 1.0 out of 5 stars Same old nonsense
Like all books about Atlantis (and, for that matter, other silly pseduoscience and pseudohistory), this book provides no evidence except that which the author makes up. The fact of the matter is, the science of plate tectonics and continental drift shows, conclusively, that no continent could ever have existed in the Mid-Atlantic. The source of the Atlantis legend, as...

This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
This book gives excellent, comprehensive evidence for the existence of an island on the Midatlantic Ridge. Berlitz does not try to convince people of anything concerning the people or culture present on the island, but instead points out that the Ridge would have been above water during the last ice age and presents his evidence from there. Comparisons of languages on both sides of the Atlantic ocean for similar words, migratory paths of certain animals, archeaological anomalies, and an analysis of flood mythology from around the world are used to support the basic premise. Overall, it is a very good, very well researched book on an interesting topic. I have recommended it many times, not least because it stays away from anything vaguely related to channeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books available about the Atlantis theory, May 19, 1999

This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
The facts presented in this book are disturbing, and should seriously be considered by the blind scientific community. If we claim Atlantis, whatever it was or wherever it really was, is just a fairy tale, we would be taking all the Ancient people for fools, because they generally say the same things, or very similar stories about it. The author didn't try to tell the reader to believe his hypothesis, but to think seriously about the *facts*. He didn't make up anything but his hypothesis, which is his own and he has very much the right to have it, especially when it's well supported. Overall, it's an excellent work on the world's most famous legend, and is definitely recommanded by yours truly. ^_^

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth is stranger than fiction, December 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
I needed a book for one of my classes and I happened to pick this one up. I thought it looked interesting and so I began to read it. I was astonished as the author, Charles Berlitz, made convincing arguments that Atlantis was real and not legend. I have had mythology and classical classes that made the same statements but it was left up to us to believe whether it was true or not. Berlitz demands that you look at his information and draw the same conclusion as he; that Atlantis truly existed. While I can't say that I totally believe I have a clearer picture and will definitely research it more. Maybe someday I will be writing a book that does prove that Atlantis existed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Charles Berlitz!, March 14, 2001
A logical argument about Atlantis minus all the New Age garbage. There aren't any references to channeling, ESP, Edgar Cayce, the Pleiadians, technical remote viewing, Nostrodomus, or Ed Dames... thank goodness. This book if for people who wish to engage in good scholarly research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mother of empires, February 17, 2004
This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
I remember picking up this book years ago when I was in seventh grade and it still fascinates me today. Charles Berlitz makes a very readable and logical argument for the existence of Atlantis by revealing that many disparate cultures shared a legend about a lost civilization that was far ahead of its time. The photographs of other archeological sites are also interesting. I would suggest picking up a copy of Discovery of Atlantis by Robert Sarmast for a more current theory on the Atlantis legend along with this well written and enjyoyable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly accurate., December 8, 1998

This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
Dear Mr. Berlitz,

It was a great surprise to read the results of you investigations, for they confirm the knowledge we already had from 'Atlantis - a true history' a novel by Yoke.

'...a catastrophe became inevitable: some scientists had been experimenting on nuclear power, waiting for an opportunity to use it. At last they decided to confer humanity a benefit in destroying some volcano's, which they reckoned might erupt any minute. So they bombed five of them. The force of the explosions, added to the natural forces that make volcano's erupt, were indeed cause of their end... And of all other volcano's, and the continent as well. The natural effect was a kind of chain-reaction, partly underground, activating an immensely destructive force, which shook the earth. Floods and earthquakes changed the whole world- Atlantis only stayed alive in the world's memory'

'...however, not all of Atlantis got destroyed. Great Britain, Ireland and the English Channel Islands survived; as a token of a long-forgotten religion Stonehenge is one of the sacred places wher the One was worshipped...'

Yoke is a woman who has direct access to what she calls 'the Akasha Chronicals', meaning the cosmic memory in which anything ever happened can be re-experienced by those who are qualified to do so. She is an author as well, and already wrote several books about life in this world as well as in the spiritual worlds.

Yours truly, Frank Vogelsang,

5.0 out of 5 stars Empires DID exist 50,000 years ago!, August 22, 2002
This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent (Mass Market Paperback)
I have to disagree with the previous review.
On one point I agree, Atlantis was not in the Atlantic Ocean (at least the Ocean as we know it today).

A theory on the location of Atlantis I believe to be the most accurate is that it is located of the coast of South China/Indonesia.
Take a look at a map of Indonesia and think about some
very simple questions: "Why was China more advanced than the rest of the world for so long?", "Why is there more of a chance of it being there than the rest of the world?"

Keep in mind, ALL seas were considered to be the Atlantic ocean.

And for the skeptics:
Consider, for a moment, the city of Troy. Conventional
wisdom had maintained for centuries that Troy, discussed in Homer's great work the "Iliad," was a figment of Greek legend and few scholars took its possible existence as a serious matter. And, then, along comes a German archaelogist named Schliemann, who in 1870 defies conventional wisdom and excavates the city of Troy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rational methodical readable work of an interesting subject, October 3, 2008
This review is from: Atlantis: The Eighth Continent
I'm truly surprised to find I'm the first person to review this great work!!!

During the early part of my research, I came across enough chatting about Atlantis that made me wonder if there's wasn't something to the Atlantis Myth. This was the first Berlitz work I encountered in my research and it was so good that ever since I have bought anything written by this man(Except his language books). He approaches his research methodically and for the most part in depth, though I have found a couple of his works which don't appear to be quite as thorough...one of his earlier works, and one which was more a sampling of interesting stories.

This work was excellent, and far better than his earlier attempt at the Atlantis "myth". Typically people who consider the reality of Atlantis are either completely enamoured of the subject or completely antagonistic towards it, usually because it so upsets conventional geologic theories as it would mean the earth changed radically during civilized times. To me the enamoured people seemed to me like they were part of some sort of lunatic fringe...

When I started to read this book I was in the middle, as I didn't know enough to be able to speak knowledgeably one way or the other. This book gave convincing evidence to the affirmative and made me look seriously at some things that otherwise I might have passed over.

Berlitz approaches the subject rationally and coherently. He seems a bit detached from his works as he never seems to positively identify himself with the complete agreement of his evidence...but I suppose that may be due to his determination to appear unbiased. Fair enough.

This is a highly recommendable book on the subject of Atlantis, and it will indeed allow you to take a fair look at the legends and see some very good evidence for the case. And to top it off it is very readable stuff. I enjoyed this work and subsequently bought every book I could find by this guy as he was so logistical, rational and methodical in his work.

The mainstream uniformitarian and evolutionary media and scholastic branches and those who hold fast to their opinions will not like Berlitzs' work simply because he researches stuff and finds all kinds of stuff the mainstream hides from the common man. This guy is not afraid to reveal much of the stuff out there and he presents it extremely well.

When My step dad wanted some interesting reading I handed him some of the better research book's I'd read and several of them were by Berlitz.
I highly recommend this one.
