Atlas of Anatomy contains everything students need to successfully tackle the daunting challenges of anatomy.

Complete with exquisite, full-color illustrations by award-winning artists Markus Voll and Karl Wesker, the atlas is organized to lead students step-by-step through each region of the body. Each region opens with the foundational skeletal framework. The subsequent chapters build upon this foundation, adding the muscles, then organs, then vessels, then nerves, and finally presenting topographic anatomy for a comprehensive view. Each unit closes with surface anatomy accompanied by questions that ask the reader to apply knowledge learned for the real-life physical examination of patients.

Features:

- 2,200 full-color illustrations of unsurpassed quality

- Brief introductory texts that provide an accessible entry point when a new topic is presented

- Clinical correlates and images, including radiographs, MRIs, CT scans, and endoscopic views

- Muscle Fact pages that organize the essentials, including origin, insertion, and innervation--ideal for memorization, reference, and review

- Navigators that orient the reader with location and plane of dissection

- A scratch-off code provides access to Winking Skull.com PLUS, an interactive online study aid, featuring over 600 full-color anatomy illustrations and radiographs, “labels-on, labels-off” functionality, and timed self-tests

This atlas provides everything students need in just the right format, making the mastery of human anatomy eminently achievable.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Have you ever pulled out an atlas of anatomy to show a patient a tendon or muscle that is a source of his symptoms? Or have you referred back to your anatomy text from school to remind yourself of the relationship between structures? Are you a student taking anatomy? Then the newly published book from Thieme, Atlas of Anatomy, and its interactive website, www.winkingskull.com, should be on your reference shelf and bookmarked on your computer. The drawings appear to leap off the page in three rather than two dimensions... I was blown away by the website... It is engagingly interactive...highly recommend[ed]."--ADVANCE for Physical Therapists and PT Assistants

"[Five stars] A brilliant masterpiece, filled with anatomical illustrations of great accuracy, appropriately labeled...aesthetically appealing...flows logically and systematically through the regions of the body...indispensable...for medical students...and medical residents in surgical specialties"--Doody's Review

"Of the several atlases that are available to the student, the [atlas] is one of the most useful and complete. Its 623 pages not only cover the gross anatomy of the human body, but also have extensive illustrations encompassing the peripheral innervation, lymphatics, arterial supply, and venous drainage of the various regions... Many radiographic images are included when appropriate to integrate the anatomy with the radiology. In addition, surface anatomy illustrations and clinical correlation boxes are generously sprinkled throughout the atlas to integrate this information with future clinical experiences. The completeness of this Atlas along with its presentation, clarity of illustrations, and content brings everything together for the student. This Atlas is indeed a powerful learning tool for students. It will be utilitzed by the students in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy, and by the clerks in surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, and neurology. Finally, this is an atlas that they will return to as first-year residents when they review specific regions of the human body for their training."--Clinical Anatomy

"A fine addition to anatomical atlas classics...organized...with learners in mind. Especially useful are the musculature tables, which summarize origins, insertions, innervations, and actions. The combination of anatomical and clinical information makes this book a sold addition to collections that support courses in human anatomy."--Choice

"Richly illustrated with color drawings and multiple tables. It covers the entire body including the back, thorax, abdomen/pelvis, upper limb, lower limb, head and neck, and neuroanatomy."--American Journal of Neuroradiology

4.0 out of 5 stars Great addition, October 24, 2008
This review is from: Atlas of Anatomy (Thieme Anatomy) (Hardcover)
I would have said the world did not need another big anatomy book if someone had asked me a year ago. That said this is a wonderful book.

I think the art remains inferior to Netter's. However for a student the quality of the depiction is not everything. When trying to learn details can quickly become liabilities. This book does an excellent job of striking an appropriate balance for medical students.

The other striking departure from Netter's (the gold standard in my mind) is the inclusion of useful text throughout the book. Netter's is really just a collection of spectacular images that have been meticulously labeled. The Thieme atlas includes significantly more information on the structures. Not to be misunderstood this is clearly an atlas not a text book, if you want a text book look to Moore.

So here's my ranking of the real atlases on the market today:

Netter: the gold standard, but perhaps not the ideal book for a first year medical student, the best art, amazing flashcards, the complete collection (about $2,000 if you can find it) is really astonishing.
Thieme: clear number two to Netter's, maybe the best for first and second year medical students.
Rohen: the photo atlas, visualization is limited by tissue reality but a great tool for practical exam preparation.
Grant: Art for Moore.
Moore: the definitive anatomy text book.
Acland: Great way to see anatomy if you can pay attention long enough to see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deceptively good!, January 29, 2009
This review is from: Atlas of Anatomy (Thieme Anatomy) (Hardcover)
In my opinion, this atlas is VERY effective (probably the most effective) but I don't think it can be used independently. If you use this in conjunction with Rohen's and Netter's as a supplement, then you can definitely conquer any Gross anatomy course.

What makes this book incredibly effective is that the illustrations, though cartoons, are more realistic than Netter's. Also, there are more features of the atlas that really help with understanding like: functional/physiological illustrations, detailed charts/tables, and brief written descriptions of various topics.

Again, this is a PERFECT supplement, but the only reason that I wouldn't ONLY use this is that there are certain terms and features that may be illustrated better than Netter's but not fully labeled like Netters. For example, the impression on the medistinal surfaces of the lungs are drawn effectively, but not labelled so when learning it's hard to know what the anatomical features are. Aside from that, this book is amazing.
