This text is intended primarily for diagnostic microscopists, pathologists and clinicians involved in the diagnosis of oncological disease. The clinical and hisotological correlation should be of interest to all those concerned with the fine structural details of the cell and in the clinically relevant biological behaviour that cellular morphological changes reflect. Cytopathology is an intensely demanding discipline and skill, and the author argues that it is an art. The intention is to present photomicrographs that are visually stimulating, yet meaningful in their depiction of the structural details of cells, as related to their clinically relevant behaviour. The "Routine Papanicolaou", stain which produces a rainbow of colours, was used in the majority of cases in the author's clinical and academic unit. However, special stains and immunocytochemical stains were used to solve difficult clinical problems. The text and the legends in this book have been designed to provide additional background information and teaching discussion. Selected cases have been included to reinforce a particular diagnostic problem. Furthermore, the text argues that diagnostic cytopathology cannot be practised in a vacuum. The author has attempted to emphasize the critical importance of interpreting the cellular changes while keeping the clinical findings and/or possibilities constantly in mind.
