Just mix the 55 transparent cards in this set together with your copy of Gloom to add morbid new Modifiers, Events, and Untimely Deaths, and a new family of intrepid explorers who've faced misfortune across the globe. These days Colonel Bumpersnoot is really more of a bargain hunter, while Lady Bumpersnoot struggles with high society -- but she always loves to have guests for dinner. Their Towering Treehouse is included as a Residence card to use with the Unhappy Homes expansion.

Unfortunate Expeditions introduces Expeditions into the game. Set the new Expedition cards to one side. When you play a Modifier or Untimely Death with an Expedition symbol, resolve the immediate effects of the card, then place that Expedition in the center of the table. Only one Expedition can be in play at a time, so it replaces the current Expedition, if there is one. An Expedition's rules affect all players as long as it's in play. Some cards also have special effects that occur if a particular Expedition is already in play when they're played.

I've been a fan of Gloom and Unhappy Homes for a few years now, but I just discovered the two other expansion packs (Uninvited Guests and Unfortunate Expeditions) last week! I got them in the mail yesterday, and immediately cracked them open with three other enthusiastic Gloom lovers and one complete novice to the game. With ALL of the cards and rules finally in play (except for two of the Uninvited Guests)...the game took us almost three hours. Woah. That's a liiiittle bit too long for some people, but overall we had a great time with it. I think it's important to note that the two new expansions are for players 13 and up (whereas the first two sets were for ages 8 and up), and that's no joke; they both add some DIFFICULT elements to the game, and it's hard to keep track of everything that...um, needs to be kept track of? I do recommend both packs to any true fans of Gloom, but don't be surprised when you start killing people off just to end the game, nevermind your scores.

Both packs have MUCH improved in printing quality; you can barely read the old cards compared to the new ones. I wish I could have my old packs retroactively reprinted! They look absolutely beautiful. My only fault with them is the directions are a little bit less understandable for these new cards. There were several points in the game where we all had to "agree" on how certain cards should be used since there seemed to be no description of how exactly to use them (ie. the white "event" [?] cards).

Overall, though, the new rules really liven things up!

This expansion deck for the core Gloom card game allows you to add an additional player, as it has a new "family", and includes several new event and action cards to bring new twists into the game play. The new deck also adds an additional level of complexity to the game that can significantly increases the required playing time.

Since this is an expansion deck, you must already have the original game for these cards to be used and, depending on how much time we have, we sometimes take out the "special" cards from this deck and play using the original rules.

This is a great way to expand the number of players and to bring new life (no pun intended) to your Gloom game!

Gloom is a wonderful card game with the unique (and clever) mechanic of using transparent plastic cards that "stack" upon each other as the game progresses. Game play is relatively straightforward: (1) play cards that subtract points on your own "family" members or that add points to other "families", (2) "kill" family members (yours or others), (3) attempt to accumulate the lowest score.

Each card contains its own set of rules that affect game play, so each card contains (often substantial) text.

The game is fairly flexible in terms of the number of players it can accommodate, but somewhere between 3-5 is probably best. If you stick to those numbers, a game will usually take around 30-45 minutes.

Unfortunate Expeditions is not a standalone set but rather an expansion to the main Gloom game. In addition to a new family, it adds a new "Expedition" mechanic that features cards that provide a new set of global rules to the table, depending on which such card is "active" at any given moment. This new feature is a lot of fun, and provides a welcome twist to the existing rules. This set also includes a "residence" card which is compatible with the Unhappy Homes expansion.

Overall, the play is very fun, portable, fast-paced, and often amusing. As you may have surmised by the initial synopsis, the humor is dark and morbid (albeit very tongue-in-cheek). If that isn't your cup of tea, this game won't entertain you. The art is suited perfectly to the theme.

APPROPRIATE AUDIENCE: Hardcore gamers will enjoy this as a "warm-up" between their more complicated gaming sessions. It's a useful tool for introducing newcomers to these kinds of games (although Fluxx or Current Number of the Beast are maybe even better for this purpose).

OVERALL SCORE: B. The new cards add great variation to the existing base set.

"Expeditions" are an interesting mechanic, but I'll summarize them here: There are 4 of them, North, South, East, and west. They are VERY easy to switch between, and act as game-wide rule changes while they are present. An easy mechanic to master and very much worth adding to the game.

I bought this set together with the original Gloom game, betting that the possibilities it offers would expand the fun and longevity of the Gloom experience. Good bet! This was a gift for my adult son, who plays a lot of games, and also does improvisational comedy, and I felt the Gloom experience would hone his and his team's improv skills while providing a lot of dark-humor chuckles. He loves it. Highly recommended.
