1.0 out of 5 stars Ok if you've got a PHD in Geography
Very disappointed that there was hardly anything about the US. Most of the maps you cannot determine which present day country you are looking viewing. These maps are beautiful but not at all what I expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece edition of an amazing atlas, November 2, 2006
This review is from: Atlas Maior of 1665 (Hardcover)
According to Taschen's website, "The finest and most comprehensive baroque atlas was Joan Blaeu's exceptional Atlas Maior, completed in 1665."

This reproduction of what was orginally an 11 volume magnum opus with 594 maps has been loving recreated by Taschen. The color reproductions are beautiful with large fold out illustrations scattered throughout the atlas. The detail on the maps themselves is striking.

The quality of this reproduction is spectacular, and the book itself is absolutely enormous. Forget coffee table book, this is a dining room table edition. It weighs in at 18 lbs and arrived at my doorstep in a gigantic box.

If you have any interest in maps, history, or beautiful bookmaking, this edition is worth every penny (much like most of Taschen's other offerings).

I've been hunting old world maps for a while. Usually, these were expensive and not practical to look at. During a trip to the Musée du Louvre in Paris, I stumbled upon the Atlas Maior. I nearly got down on my knees. Very complete, detailed, impressive, just amazing. The cost is not a factor for the huge beast of great art and History.

For those of us who love ancient maps and the history of cartography, this book brings us the possibility of having a facsimile of the turning point, master-piece of the golden age of cartography. I'd been looking for this book in my country with no success, I'm very happy to have it in my collection. Regards from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indeed, the greatest atlas, May 12, 2007
This review is from: Atlas Maior of 1665 (Hardcover)
Johan Blaauw's incredibly large atlas - a marvel of cartography -, in a glorious edition by Taschen. The combination of full page reprints and overviews with commentary makes for one of the most luscious books I ever saw. Mesmerizing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Great!, January 16, 2009

I recently purchased 3 original maps by Blaeu. I purchased this book just as a reference for some restoration work that was going to be done on the maps. The maps are the original size with blow-up of some of the cartouches. They are fantastic.

If you are into collecting or just like the look of the Blaeu maps - this is the definitive book.

This Atlas is truly a work of art. The quality of the book itself is wonderful. Several of the pages fold out to large-scale maps/drawings - We have spent hours pouring over the detail in this book. It makes a wonderful gift or addition to a collection. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Object of attraction, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Atlas Maior of 1665 (Hardcover)
This sits on my coffee table and is a great companion to watching any sort of historical documentary on TV etc. Also makes for good cocktail party reading/conversation.

I've seen an original copy of this in the NYPL and this printing is true to form, with insightful tidibits and good translations extras.

The Bleau Atlas Major is the most beatiful and prolific atlases ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars the ultimate atlas, October 22, 2009

This review is from: Atlas Maior of 1665 (Hardcover)
This is nothing less than a work of art. Its a comprehensive reproducton of John Blaeu's Atlas of 1665 in the form of a gigantic annotated book. The color reproductions are outstanding. The book is very large and very heavy. Its almost too big for a coffee table book but for people who enjoy history and illustrated maps, there is simply nothing else like it. Its not a 1 for 1 replica of the original 11-volume work. Some maps are reproduced at less than the size of the book to make room for information but they are generally lesser maps. There are other Blaeu reproductions out there, but this is a one of a kind treasure.
