Book Description

March 27, 1998 0415106710 978-0415106719 10
Revised and in print since 1957, An Atlas of World Affairs has proved a valued guide to the people, factions and events that have shaped the modern world from the second world war to the present day.
The world map has changed dramatically since the publication of the ninth edition of An Atlas of World Affairs. This tenth edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, placing international issues and conflicts in their most recent geographical contexts through the integration of a hundred maps. Material on new issues includes the break up of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, the expansion of the European Union, the reshaping of South Africa and the pressing environmental concerns faced by many of the new sovereign states.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Though An Atlas of World Affairs is huge in scope, the book itself is small and light, favoring simple yet effective maps in black-and-white over glossy color plates. Rather than divulge every historical twist and shout from time immemorial, it looks at the radical changes in modern history, explaining the background for what's occurred to the people, economies, alliances, religions, and nations of the world in the last few decades--and it succeeds admirably well. Still muddled about the Tutsi-Hutu conflicts in Rwanda, what happened in former Yugoslavia, or just who the Kurds are? This slim text will fill you in, while setting an academic standard for precision, lucidity, and accessibility, making it equally suitable for family libraries, student book bags, and diplomatic pouches alike. --Stephanie Gold

Review

It is a book for people who wish the journalists would explain a little more; and indeed, for thejournalists themselves The Economist March 21st 1998

This new edition of this atlas is justly described by the publishers as a valuable guide for the student, teacher, journalist and many others...the book's usefulness is not only in its comprehensive cover of world affairs, but also in the way in which it can be accessed Geography July 1998
