Persephone's music is archetypal, haunting and deeply spiritual. Listening to her music strongly evokes, well, the goddess that is the band's namesake. Ranging from despair, rage, triumph and contentment, anyone mythologically minded will find themselves rethinking the traditional ideas of Persephone's myth as they listen to this music. Of particular interest are "Facing the Ruins" and "Our Dream"- in a word, beautiful.

Released by a collective known as Persephone, named after the ancient goddess, this album comes across as wanting to be a very complete and encompassing audio experience in that it addresses a range of emotions but conversely tends to do so from a minimalist stance. The atmospheric music here is in many respects (right down to the cover art) of an ambient gothic viewpoint and a perusal of the lyrics will show that it's pretty much all a paeon to despair on one level or another. Although to be fair the moody vocal stylings of Sonja Kraushoffer and the elegantly understated music would probably make your average Christmas carol sound moribound. Not that there isn't a place for that sort of thing in my musical world and certainly if this product of a plethora of cello, violins, viola and the like interspersed with gentle guitar (and even a didgeridoo at one point) sounds like your cup of laced tea then you could do a lot worse than open yourself up to this release.
And apart from the music? Well the production is warm, not cloistered but modern and lush, the booklet has full lyrics and credits and the cover artwork gives further ideas as to what the buyer is getting. My copy came in one of those annoying cardboard style packagings that will be scuffed before you even get it to your shelf but hey, I'll survive. Reminded me of a non hard rock/metal Octavia for some strange reason I can't fathom..... |
