Editorial Reviews

Double vinyl LP pressing. There's no doubt that Oregon's Yob is one of the most recognizable names in the underground metal game of thrones. Their 2009 comeback LP the Great Cessation brought them to heights of recognition that they'd always deserved but had never achieved. The world was finally ready for Yob. In 2011, Yob is now firmly back, hungry to tour and have delivered a striking five-song statement in the form of Atma. 20 Buck Spin has the honor of releasing the band's latest as a gatefold double-LP.

Yob write albums that span doom, sludge, and heavy metal while always maintaining the integrity of the almighty RIFF. They know that the most important part of the doom/sludge song isn't the lead, it isn't the melody, it isn't the build-up, it's the payoff. And the payoffs on Atma are sweet! Many similar bands don't understand the simple dynamics that create a memorable, worthwhile song in the doom genre, focusing more on the wringing out of power chords or the cathartic wailing of their front-men. Yob enjoy these things as well, but maturely and smartly pinpoint the aggression and the pain, and channel it at the most opportune times. The vocals are varied and excellently delivered; half the reason this band can keep your attention through such long songs. The drums are perfectly paced and dropped with power and precision. And the low end rumble of the bass steps in unison with the drums and weaves around the guitars to form a dirge-like rhythm that wholly encapsulates the listener. This is one of those albums you put on and listen to all the way through. So for doom/sludge that is heads and tails above the rest, find Atma, find some green, and ride the pain train. Yob will be your conductor.

Yob, a 'doom metal' band from Oregon, are the spiritual sons of Black Sabbath. This cd is SO heavy, so full of riffs, so slow and plodding. It's an experience listening to this. I was blown away on first listen, and continue to hear new sounds every time I listen to it. If you like heavy music, if you like doom, if you like Sabbath, and you don't own this, you are denying yourself an audio experience that you will be so glad you embraced. Buy this CD!!!

Though it might come as a surprise to some, given the clear roots of YOB in Black Sabbath, this is intensely spiritual music -- a doom metal doorway to enlightenment. The five long songs all have serious metaphysical lyrics printed in the single-sheet foldout, and the graphics feature a mystical diagram of overlapping triangles in a circle that reveals the path inward to infinity. Scott Kelly of Neurosis, another intensely spiritual doom metal band, contributes vocals and lyrics to "Before We Dreamed of Two." It is entirely appropriate that YOB has released their latest, Clearing the Path to Ascend (2014), on Neurot Recordings, the Neurosis label.

Here is a lyric to give you an idea of the content:

UPON THE SIGHT OF THE OTHER SHORE
Fire Burns Through Darkness
Unseen Unveiled
Come Bear To Witness
Belief Shaken To The Core
Upon The Sight Of The Other Shore

Heaven Speaks In Riddles
Prophets Speak In Tongues
The Dead Speak In Silence
Love Smiles In Surrender

Red Eyes In Desperation
A World We Cannot Escape
Clutching Hate Like A Weapon
Blood In Our Hands
Expound The Gospel

Belief Shaken To The Core
Upon the Sight Of The Other Shore

My interpretation is that "the other shore" is what buddhists call "nirvana" -- Enlightenment, Peace. Catching a glimpse of it through experience brings the realization that an end to suffering is possible.

I heard the more recent CLEARING THE PATH first, and now, seeking out more YOB music, I can say that ATMA is also superb!

I am a long time metal fan. (It's easier to just put all heavy music in the metal genre.) It is always a pleasure to hear a metal band that has some unique traits to break up the monotony. The guitar work on this album is excellent and strays from the typical hooks that you hear in most metal today. I kind of cringe when I hear too much screaming or growling, but the guitarist/vocalist pulls off balanced vocals, with just enough guttural rage and "regular" singing to satisfy all metal fans. This is an album that needs to be listen to multiple times to be appreciated, in my opinion. It is dark, doomy, sludgy, sad, beautiful, and twisted. The guitar work alone will keep you scratching your head in wonder. ALL fans of metal should check this out.

I read after the newest Yob album came out that a lot of people consider Atma to be their weakest album. I'm not sure I believe that, but even if it's true, that sets a pretty high watermark. While it doesn't quite reach the level of Clearing the Path to Ascend (for me, one song per side is just about ideal), it's still a really phenomenal album. And the brightly colored vinyl is very attractive too. They are one of those bands where now that I got to see them live once, I am going to be extra-vigilant about any time they're playing anywhere nearby, since I don't want to miss another chance to see them. Even if the engineering on this one is a bit more on the sterile side, the tone is still completely massive.
