sprawling doom metal from one of the genre's better outfits,
By Scott Hedegard "Scott" (Fayetteville, AR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Atma (Audio CD)
I looked up "Yob" trying to find out what, if anything that word stood for. Nearly as I can tell, it's a shortened version of "yobber", a British term for a general no good lazy ass goof off. This band is not a "yob" in that sense. The Portland, Oregon trio has been around for quite some time, and after reforming a few years back is catching the ears of doom fans farther away from its Pacific coast base.
One reviewer ecstatically declared Yob to be heavier than Electric Witch and more powerful than High On Fire and that was enough to pique my curiosity. I don't judge sound quality on my little computer speakers, but I do get the gist of the band. Yob truly belong on a stereo that can handle the sound, and my home outfit is more than powerful enough. It isn't a killer like sets you see today, but geezus, 200 watt per channel speakers with a 150 watt amp is enough to shatter windows, and I've never been able to tolerate the volume past about the 9:00 position. This is important dealing with doom because the tempos are slow and the guitars have lots of time to sing out those sludgy chords. "Atma" sonically to these ears does have a bit of High On Fire's thick tone and the tempo and long songs of Electric Wizard. A bit of St. Vitus can also be discerned. The thing that makes Yob a little different is Mike Scheidt's vocals. In addition to handling the guitars, he offers a space-out Geddy Lee style vocal that is frankly pretty weird when so much doom is gutteral grunts or buried in the mix as to be almost gone. There are even a few harmonies but overall the higher style gives lift to a very heavy riff machine and helps keep it above the water line. This helps because out of just five tracks, one is over 15 minutes and the closer is over 13 minutes long. But somehow the album doesn't get boring - it's doom done at its yobby best, this time using the term "yob" for what I would have guessed it to be - something heavy, slow moving and maybe a little slimy too. But kidding aside, fans of Electric Wizard, St. Vitus and Sleep will dig "Atma". Just don't drive during this CD if you're tired or have experienced some chemical alterations.

Doomy, Sludgy, Heavy Metal Bliss,

This review is from: Atma (Audio CD)
Yob write albums that span doom, sludge, and heavy metal while always maintaining the integrity of the almighty RIFF. They know that the most important part of the doom/sludge song isn't the lead, it isn't the melody, it isn't the build-up, it's the payoff. And the payoffs on Atma are sweet! Many similar bands don't understand the simple dynamics that create a memorable, worthwhile song in the doom genre, focusing more on the wringing out of power chords or the cathartic wailing of their front-men. Yob enjoy these things as well, but maturely and smartly pinpoint the aggression and the pain, and channel it at the most opportune times. The vocals are varied and excellently delivered; half the reason this band can keep your attention through such long songs. The drums are perfectly paced and dropped with power and precision. And the low end rumble of the bass steps in unison with the drums and weaves around the guitars to form a dirge-like rhythm that wholly encapsulates the listener. This is one of those albums you put on and listen to all the way through. So for doom/sludge that is heads and tails above the rest, find Atma, find some green, and ride the pain train. Yob will be your conductor.

RIFFS!!!,

Yob, a 'doom metal' band from Oregon, are the spiritual sons of Black Sabbath. This cd is SO heavy, so full of riffs, so slow and plodding. It's an experience listening to this. I was blown away on first listen, and continue to hear new sounds every time I listen to it. If you like heavy music, if you like doom, if you like Sabbath, and you don't own this, you are denying yourself an audio experience that you will be so glad you embraced. Buy this CD!!!
