Eclectica: New Age for normal people, March 6, 2000
This review is from: AtmosphereS - CULTURES (Audio CD)
New Age is often so maligned (sometimes fairly) for being formless and hippie-ish. The thing I really dig about this disc is that it takes the atmospheric (well, duh, check the title) quality of New Age and toughens it up with actual song structures. It explores a variety of moods (besides just 'spiritual') and genres, which lends the whole work more credibility. It all seems like a serious exploration of conveying the soothing aspects of New Age through all different types of 'cultures.' It's kind of uneven. 'Baseball Boogie' feels particularly unnecessary. But when it works, like on the first track, 'Gelukkig,' it feels like something new and unique, like world music that couldn't come from any country except the composer's head.
