Buy a different book,
This review is from: Atmospheric Thermodynamics: Elementary Physics and Chemistry (Hardcover)
This text is informally written, uses terms before introducing the definition, and contains a few minor scientific errors(e.g. "the chemical properties of an element depend on the number of protons in the nucleus" - page 36; Sorry, electron configuration would be a more correct statement -- protons play no direct role in chemical bonding). Nevertheless, it does contain decent derivations of elementary concepts, although these could likely be found elsewhere...
