When does a remix become a different song altogether? The answer lies somewhere between tracks 1 and 2 of this CD. Track one is basically the album version of Fluke's classic "atom bomb." Track 2 is all right, sort of 4th of july fireworks display set to mid-tempo, relatively boring music. It sounds cheap. It doesn't work. It doesn't sound like "atom bomb." There are no lyrics, and, to these ears, no material from the original track at all. What is it doing here?

Track 3 is somewhat better. Again, it strays pretty far from the original, no lyrics, basically an "atom bomb"-like beat augmented with grooves and snippets from the original track. It's above mediocre, if little simple by Fluke's standards, but this is what I expect on a remix. No complaints.

The last track is more or less a shortened, re-arranged version of the original, with the grind-drone taken out to make it a little more danceable. There's nothing wrong with it, I geuss, but it ends to quickly to ever develop into anything. Really, the disc comes in at under 25 minutes as it is; there's room for some development.

What I would like to know is, where's the stunning remix that appeared on the Wipeout XL compilation? I bought this disc and Risotto based on that track alone, and it still stands as one of my favorite peices of music, period. Risotto was worth it. This isn't. There's nothing here. This is for hardcore Fluke fans only. Check out Wipeout XL, though, which also has another Fluke track, "V-Six," and some great Chemical Brothers and Underworld that never made it onto one of their albums.

I bought this and the second single (with 4 other remixes) without a glance when I finally FOUND them. Obviously, being remixes, the sound is similar, but the style and air of each track is different. There's upbeat, there's downbeat, there's talkative, there's instrumental. If you like Fluke, and you should (get Risotto for the 'Kitten Moon' track alone if you don't have it yet).. you will like this.

Atom Bomb has a slower beat than most, but the song is great. The whispered vocals-"baby's got an atom bomb/twenty megaton/baby's got her pain on tap.." are so fine and fitting with the sound. If you've ever heard Fluke before, you won't be surprised by the dark, bottom-end, synth sounds on this track. Electro/techno at its best.
