Book Description

April 26, 2002
Atomic Archive: Enhanced Edition combines photographs, restored film footage, and historical documents with over ten years of research to tell one of the most intriguing stories of the twentieth century.

With over thirty minutes of video and more than 400 photographs from government archives, an extensive text written for this CD-ROM, and interactive maps and timeline, Atomic Archive: Enhanced Edition divides the Atomic Age into four main categories:

Science: A background of atomic physics and nuclear weapons

History: A comprehensive section chronicling the discovery of nuclear fission, the race for the atomic bomb, the development of the hydrogen bomb and the ensuing Cold War and beyond

Consequences: Examine the efforts for arms control, the various effects of nuclear weapons, and explores "what if" scenarios of nuclear explosions on three major U.S. cities

Library: Enrich your understanding of the people and events of the Manhattan Project by perusing an archive of compelling materials including photos, film clips, and documents - some recently declassified-and a comprehensive timeline which marks milestones in nuclear history

This interactive CD-ROM provides countless possibilities for exploration of the subject and includes the following:

* Over 150 pages of original text written specifically for this CD-ROM
* Historical interactive maps and timeline
* Interactive glossary and hypertext links
* Over 30 detailed biographies
* Formerly classified footage from the award-winning films "Trinity and Beyond" and "The Atomic Filmmakers"
* A gallery of more than 400 photographs with accompanying captions

Over fifty years ago, on July 16, 1945, the world's first nuclear weapon exploded into the desert sky of New Mexico. 5.0 out of 5 stars Atomic Archive: Enhanced Edition worth waiting for, June 23, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Atomic Archive: Enhanced Edition (CD-ROM)
I used elements from the original edition to prepare a course on the atomic bomb and was impressed with the number of entries, though some were a bit light. This has been fixed in the enhanced edition, which combines excellent graphics, more through research, and extremely helpful references and links. I believe it could be of use in a library as a reserve reference, or to serve as a basis to illustrate scientific phenomena for non-science students. The selection of archival footage is also very good. The company also has a series of videos well worth considering.

An excellent publication for teaching and historical accounts. Provides easily undertsandable student information about atomic energy and development in lay terms. Excellent biographies of involved scientists and others involved with plentiful animated viewing aids. Unbiased historical account. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Atomic Disappointment, March 11, 2007

First of all, says works on Mac, but it doesn't say that it does NOT work with OS 10. Also, the "hundreds" of photographs are of extremely low quality and very small. You can find more information and better images online. Sounded good, but for me a waste of money.
