This review is from: Atrend A202-12 Atrend Series 12-Inch Dual Up-Fire Bandpass Vented Enclosure for Dodge Ram Quad Cab 2002 and Up with Bedliner Finish (Electronics)
I wasn't expecting much for a $140 enclosure, but I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the product. Most high-end stereo shops couldn't build a better box. Of course, a well-built custom box could have been made a bit bigger to take full advantage of the under seat space that it occupies. As it is, I'd recommend using some L-brackets or other strategy to secure the box in place. Had we not already ordered 12-inch woofers, I would have probably gone with the 10-inch variant of this box. The reason...this box has limited volume. It's probably too small for most 12" subs. We originally ordered the shallow Pioneer 12-inch subs for this box but they DO NOT fit. The area about 2 inches in from the subwoofer cutout only has 2.0 inches of depth clearance. The Pioneer Subs do not have the customary taper to the basket like conventional speakers. Hence it interferes with this box.
We needed to complete the project quickly so we sourced some 12-inch suibs that would fit...JL Audio 12W1v2s in 4ohm. These are not the optimum woofers for a box this small in volume (guessing that the total volume of the box in under 0.5 cubic foot for each woofer and JL Audio wants 1.5 for each) but they physically fit. Since these JLs are better suited for a larger box, the subs are essentially oversprung. The smaller volume enclosure increases the sub's power handling, but it makes the amp work harder for the same volume levels. This means lower SPL for a given power output. Still, the combination of JL Audio subs and this enclosure produce all the bass that anyone without earplugs would need. We are powering the subs with a Pioneer GM-D7500M Class D Mono amp that's rated at 400W continuous into a 2-ohm load. If we didn't have plenty of amplifier power, we would recommend taking this box to the location where you purchase your subs to see what fits (maybe a Soloclassic from Kicker would work). If you could fit a sub specifically made for small enclosures, you'll likely need less amp power for the same volume levels. In any case, it seems that ATrend makes a well-constructed enclosure but they may not be best at designing the enclosures to have adequate volume or speaker clearance for the application. If I had to do it all again, dual 10-inch enclosure from ATrend OR if I had to have 12s, try the Soloclassic or similar speaker to limit the power needed to deliver adequate volume output.
