Book Description

June 15, 2000 0340731710 978-0340731710 1
In our time, the view that parent-child relationships play a central role in a child's psychological development has been widely accepted. This was not always the case. Attachment theory and the research it generated played an important role in producing the empirical evidence needed to support this view, and over the last 30 years, there has been a literal explosion f work in this area.
Attachment and Development is one of the few comprehensive and critical overviews of theory and research in attachment across the lifespan. It provides a detailed examination of the factors that contribute to shaping early attachment and the effectsof attachment on development, including social competence, mental health, and physical health. Special emphasis is given to newly emerging research on the role of cognition and emotion in internal working models of attachment, as well as to the role of psychobiology. In order to achieve a balanced evaluation of this area as a whole, the book concludes with a critical appraisal of the contributions and limitations of attachment research and theory.
An ideal resource for developmental psychology students, this text also serves as an up-to-date reference for professionals in related disciplines, such as nursing, social work, psychiatry, and education.

Review

Cet ouvrage est un outil interessant pour les etudiants en psychologie du developpement car il est clair et les textes sont accessibles. -- Handicaps-info Excellent book on attachment. Well organized -- Dr Kathleen Murphy, University of Dublin 20030301 The book is ideal for undergraduate students who require an overview of attachment theory, but who also want to investigate beyond the introductory level of most textbooks. -- Dr S Groarke, Southlands College 20030301

1.0 out of 5 stars Not an enjoyable read, October 3, 2010
This review is from: Attachment and Development (Paperback)
The text was helpful in that it provided proper information about attachment theory and research. However, the book was written in a very boring way, with sentences that weren't so easily understood. In addition, the layout was not particularly pleasing (very long paragraphs, squished-together text etc.).

This provides an excellent overview of the literature on attachment theory and research. It was clear, readable, and concise. A great starting place for anyone interested in the subject of attachment and how it is related to human development.
