Recent advances in our understanding of children's social development have important implications for practice in the fields of child welfare, maltreatment, family support, adoption, residential and foster care. But they have not hitherto been systematically explored. This groundbreaking book constitutes the first clear and clinically useful summary.

In Part I, integrating major research findings and exciting theoretical developments, the authors introduce the basic patterns of attachment across the life span.

In Part II, they focus on applications. Their detailed description of a practice and assessment model for work with children and families leads practitioners step by step through the key stages of information gathering, analysis and assessment, formulation of aims, and methods of intervention. The model is then used to support a range of approaches to help.

Throughout, fascinating case material, relationship histories, and interview transcripts illustrate both theory and practice. The book will be an invaluable resource for all those working with children in need.

Editorial Reviews

Review

At last, a book that translates contemporary attachment theory and research into a form suitable for application by child welfare practitioners!....this impressive book presents a fine synthesis of theory and practice. The first of the book's two parts provides a highly readable, comprehensive, and up-to-date overview of attachment theory and research, illustrating the concepts with wonderfully authentic case vignettes. The second part applies theory to practice, and its sections on assessment and analysis are excellent....In a field where practice has become so procedure-dependent, this book is desperately needed by a broad range of professionals seeking to apply core attachment concepts in their work with some of the most vulnerable children and families in our society.
READINGS: A Journal of Reviews and Commentary in Mental Health

This book makes a real contribution to the literature in that it offers an easy-to-read, comprehensive overview of attachment theory and how this theory can be applied to social work practice....One of the great strengths of the book is that concepts are first explained and then regularly illustrated with clinical case vignettes that bring the concepts alive for the reader in a meaningful way....Attachment Theory, Child Maltreatment, and Family Support is well worth reading and has may strengths....I highly recommend this book to all clinicians (not just social workers) who work with families, and I believe that it makes a significant contribution to the literature on attachment and the application of attachment theory to clinical intervention.
Contemporary Psychology

This well-organized book provides a very comprehensive and contemporary overview of attachment theory that will thoroughly acquaint new readers with the essential paradigm and also offer a refresher for those who are already fairly well versed. The extensive case reports are...well-chosen and appropriate. The authors do a nice job of integrating theory and clinical work in a difficult area in a manner that is parsimonious, readable, and scholarly. I recommend the book to a wide clinical and academic audience.
