A ridiculous story,
By Raj "raj_thatsme" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Attack of the Aqua Apes (R. L. Stines Ghosts of Fear Street, Vol. 3) (Paperback)
Synopsis: Scott Adams reads an ad in the comic book about a package that grows a species called "Aqua Apes" through water crystals, and shows it to his friend Glen Brody. Even though Glen is reluctant to share his money on this merchandise, Scott decides he must have it, because nothing scary ever happens in his life (which according to him is bad, because he lives in Fear Street) and feels that these aqua apes might bring him some excitement. They buy the item, and within a few weeks, receive the package. The package mentions to fill the bowl with distilled water, but Scott decides to fill it up with water from Fear Lake instead. That night, the bowl starts acting strange, showing signs of an unexplainable crystal bubbling from the bottom of the bowl and lights flickering on and off from it. The next morning, Scott sees a small creature, which surprisingly waves and smiles at him. The creature seems to grow bigger and bigger, but seems friendly and plays with Scott and Glen. They notice that the creature tends to shrivel up if it isn't exposed to water for a long period of time. However, once it is back in the water, it grows larger than it was before. What was once a cute little pet, soon turns out of control and becomes a monster. Will Scott and Glen be able to stop the Aqua Ape from destroying the house, and them as well?
Review: This was really a ridiculous story. I felt like I had wasted my time after reading it. First of all, WHY is this series called "Ghosts of Fear Street"? I have read two books in this series so far (this and "Night of the Werecat") and none of them had anything to do with ghosts! While we are sticking to the subject, why is this book called "Attack of the Aqua APES"? There was only 1 ape in it throughout the story. Furthermore, this book wasn't even that scary. I admit it started getting a little terrifying towards the end, when the Aqua Ape physically starts hurting Scott and his friend, but other than that, the story was more funny than eerie. I actually started laughing when the creature tied Kelly's hair with over 300 knots or when he ran loose in the video arcade. Apart from this, the story never progressed anywhere in the last 50 or so pages, and became annoyingly repetitious. The creature escapes, Scott runs after him. Scott tries to capture him, and the creature escapes to another room. I thought the ending was the worst part. It didn't even have a solid conclusion, and I felt like I was back to square one in the story. Therefore, even though I think this was an interesting concept for a story, it didn't really scare me in anyway. O

Scott Adams ordered some tiny swimming Aqua Apes from an ad on the back of a magazine. But one Aqua Ape is getting bigger and bigger. And it's teeth are getting sharper and sharper. Can Scott and his friend Glen stop him before he gets out of control?

I absolutely love R.L. Stine's books, and, although normally I lean toward Fear Street instead of Goosebumps, I think this book is great! I want to be a writer myself one day, and R.L. Stine is one of my "heros" of the writing world. Don't ever stop those great stories, R.L. Stine, and thank you!

I rated this book 3 because it's not a scary book it's an adventure book. Scott and Glen used the water in Fear Lake for their aqua apes to grow. Scott notices it's teeth, it grows sharper.
