Book Description

Who Shrunk Daniel Funk?
Daniel Funk always wanted a brother, but he’s got three sisters instead. Until he shrinks to the size of a toe—and discovers Pablo, his twin brother who’s always that small! Together, they have mountains of tiny-size fun. In Attack of the Growling Eyeballs, they release a hissing cockroach at one of their sister’s slumber party and learn that tiny-size trouble can cause mega-size danger. In Escape of the Mini-Mummy, Daniel enters the school diorama contest against Vince the Pizza Prince. Pablo comes along, disguised as a toilet-papered mummy. Can Pablo help Daniel win big, or will he create big-time Egyptian chaos?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–6—As the only boy in a household of females—Mom, three know-it-all sisters, New Age-y Grandma Lola, and Great Granny Nanny (who has tattoos and a motor scooter)—Daniel is tired of being outnumbered. Amazingly, and at a most inopportune moment, he finds himself shrinking down to toe-size and is saved from drowning in the toilet bowl by his very tiny twin brother. Born hidden inside Daniel's ear and discovered and raised in secret by Granny Nanny, the inch-high Pablo is just the ally Daniel needs. Since no one knows he exists, Pablo gets away with all kinds of clandestine monkey business. Daniel is happy to join in, but he never knows when he will unexpectedly revert to normal size—including right in the middle of their scheme to crash the girls' chic "pre-pre-pre-pre-prom" party. While the plot logic is shaky at times, the miniaturized mischief is amusing and the growing bond between the brothers feels warm and real. Black-and-white anime-influenced illustrations portray the perils of life at floor level. This genial fantasy has fast action, mild body humor, and snappy, quip-filled dialogue. It will have strong appeal for fans of Oliver's "Hank Zipzer" series (Grosset & Dunlap), coauthored with Henry Winkler, as well as reluctant readers.—Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

More About the Author

Lin Oliver is the author of over 25 funny books for kids. Well, she thinks they're funny, anyway. Seventeen of those titles are in the HANK ZIPZER: WORLD'S BEST UNDER-ACHIEVER series which she writes with Henry Winkler, about a smart boy who happens to have learning challenges. Another four are part of the WHO SHRUNK DANIEL FUNK? series about a boy who shrinks to the size of the fourth toe on his left foot only to find that he has an identical twin mini brother.

Lin is also the co-founder and Executive Director of the SCBWI, a totally impossible-to-pronounce acronym for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, an international organization of 25,000 people who write, illustrator and produce children's books.

She is the mother of three stupendous sons named Theo, Oliver and Cole. Well, she thinks they're stupendous, anyway. Oh, and their last name is Baker, so no, Oliver is not named Oliver Oliver. She would never do that to her own son!

Lin lives in Los Angeles in a big messy house with a small messy dog named Dexter and her husband, Alan Baker, who is also messy.

This book was a joy to read. Very funny and a page turner. I also really enjoyed "The Funkster's Facts." I better share them with my friends and fast, before they all read this great book.
