This book is an edited version of SRH-256, a report written by an NSA operations officer and research specialist. Text provides an objective examination of the Liberty incident. The technical rationale for the Liberty mission is set forth, as are the particulars of the Israeli explanation, details of American communications failures, a narrative of the attack, and lessons to be learned from the tragic event. Additional appendices include the report of an Israeli investigation into the attack; a State Department Report detailing discrepancies between the Israeli Inquiry and the U.S. Naval Inquiry; a juridical examination of the attack; plus an extensive up-to-date bibliography and index.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb collection of USS Liberty documents, October 30, 2003
This review is from: Attack on the Uss Liberty (Paperback)
ATTACK ON THE USS LIBERTY is a superb collection of USS Liberty documents that belongs in the library of anyone interested in this subject. This book provides the only readily-available source of the important dissertation by Navy Commander Walter Jacobsen who studied the legal implications of the attack and determined that it was a war crime on several grounds. It also contains the official report on the attack by William Gerhard for the National Security Agency. Here is where NSA's deputy director noted for the records that the Israeli excuse is "a nice whitewash".

More recently (2005), an experienced professional prosecuting attorney has examined the evidence and has also concluded that the attack on USS Liberty was a war crime, thus validating and confirming Jacobsen's findings. That study resulted in an official "Report of War Crime" filed with the Secretary of the Army by survivors of the attack. That report is supported by affidavits filed by the Navy Legal Counsel to the Court of Inquiry and by the legal advisor to the convening authority. The Department of Defense is now legally required by law to investigate the attack. So far, they are working hard to pretend it does not exist.
