Yngwie is Back,

Don't listen to a lot of the other reviews here, a lot of the people have refused to listen to the album and just review it without giving it a chance. I find one thing funny when people talk about Yngwie, they say they want him to move with the times. Well he did that in the 80's and people hated him for it(ie Odyssey). Now he is back to what he loves doing, playing neoclassical music. This album is quite a bit different from his earlier stuff, more aggressive and euro metal sounding(a good change in my opinion). Some stand outs include Touch the Sky, Baroque and Roll, and Ship of Fools. Of course you have your signature Yngwie licks and runs, and I would not want it any other way.

it is a pleasure to listen to this album. the songs are concise and with great hooks.Yngwie's guitar playing is magnificent on this cd. i have been playing 30 years and this is great guitar writing and performance. this cd is what rock music and neoclassical music is all about.this cd has the most worked out guitar parts of any of his past cds and Yngwie shows he is a true master of music. The best guitarist known to me.

This is a great cd. I own almost every malmsteen release and this cd rates up with the best! Every time I listen to it I find I like it more and more. Get the import, extended tracks because the last song "Nobodys Fool" will blow you away. It's good to know that there is someone out there that still knows how to make great melodic heavy rock. Great guitar work, great vocals and a well put together cd. You can't go wrong with this one! Yngwie please tour the states!

Better than "Magnum Opus" and "War to End All Wars", not as good as "Alchemy" or "The Seventh Sign". About on par with "Facing the Animal" and most of "Fire and Ice". The songs Rise Up and Mad Dog get the blood pumping, others range from bland to the unlistenable Freedom Isn't Free, and the instrumentals - while good examples of Yngwie's ability - make me want to listen to Far Beyond the Sun or the Hot On Your Heels intro. Yngwie's best instrumental in a decade is Blue off of "Alchemy", and it isn't topped here.
Derek Sherinian's presence is wasted by a mix that rarely gives prominance to the keyboards. What happened to Yngwie's penchant for "trading fours" with the keyboardist? Bands that write simpler music (AC/DC) can write album after album of more or less the same old thing, and that's perfectly acceptable because they can put out quality rock within the limitations of that style. Neoclassical metal, as well as progressive metal, is by its nature meant to be somewhat more intricate, and the genre shouldn't sound repetitive. The great classical album aside, on his rock stuff Yngwie just won't take a chance, and he's stale and predictable as a result. Other bands are taking the thread started by Yngwie, and are weaving more interesting musical tapestries. Listen to Despair and Pain from Richard Andersson's Space Odyssey's "Embrace the Galaxy" to hear the level at where the neoclassical metal bar currently resides. Listen to Tony MacAlpine's playing in Planet X for some great progressive neo sound (or better yet, pick up a CAB disc for some truly interesting modern fusion and jaw-dropping drumming by Dennis Chambers to complement MacAlpine). I love Yngwie's music, but when I'm in need for a fix of this type of metal I'll play something else from his catalogue, Symphony X, Sonata Arctica, Opeth (well OK, they're not really like Yngwie but they still rule), Evergrey, Artension, and others much more than I play "Attack!!" C'mon, Yngwie. I'd rather you take a chance with something potentially risky than continue to play it safe. Safe is boring (in music), and so is a lot of "Attack!!"

Yngwie's BEST,
This review is from: Attack (Audio CD)
I've been listening to Yngwie since his first recording in 1984 and I will say (without exaggeration) that this is his BEST yet. The album "Marching Out" comes in at a close second for me. Yngwie truly burns it up on this one!! The vocalist Doogie White has some amazing lungs and the drummer Patrik Johanssen left my jaw agape. Highlights include: The title track(wow), "Valley Of The Kings," "Rise Up" - and the song "Valhalla" is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs EVER!! "Attack!!" has some of the most brilliant technical playing and the recording production is flawless. If you like Yngwie, do yourself a BIG favor and get this disc! Yngwie, if You are reading this I can't thank you enough for this audio offering.

A U.S.A. Yngwie fan,

This CD is not breaking any new ground for Yngwie and it took me a while to get get used to Dougie Whites voice. Those are the only two elements that I would classify as negative about his latest release. The drumming is, I beleive, the best from any Yngwie recording. As for Yngwie - he seems to have much control and command of his sound and playing than he ever had before. These songs will grow on you (as well as Dougies voice) and they stand out much more than most of his work from the previous decade. At least he's not selling out and trying to fit in with current musical trends. Great, great stuff.

Yngwie malmsteen is the most underrated artist of the later twentieth century.Between his 1987 release trilogy and 1994's seven sign he had no equal.Yngwie music was an incredible and ingenius mix of classical stylistics and rock intensity. He has brilliantly found the fine line beteen the two.Not only that he has worked with the best singers in all of rock music and he knows how to bring out the best in each of them. When the 1990's rolled along Yngwie became a follower. The success of Metallica made the record companies dropped their 80's artists and sign only those bands that followed the Metallica sound and image. In other words Yngwie didn't fit into this new rock scene so he has passed around from record label to recored label trying to find a home. His recored sales have slumped a bit and he has unfortunately changed his sound to try to tap into the Metallica audience and all that goes with it(meaning potential records sales).Yngwie last two records were duds.Attack is a little better, but not much. The sound is still to heavy and the song writing had become generic. He has a new singer,Conerstone's Dougie white(or is it Doogie?).Whatever his name is he's a great singer. The problem is that his singing gets wasted on this record.Yngwie was trying to go back to roots a little bit with this record. There are hints of trilogy in the song touch the sky,and shades of rainbow in nobody's fool. But over all the album is disappointing.Songs like razor eater, valley of the kings, ship of fools, and valhalla have no meaning, and serve no purpose.THEY DON"T SAY ANYTHING.Although there is still some monster musicanship on Attack the songs are very two dimentional.Yngwie needs to get back to the fluid style of Eclipse(1990) his best album.Yngwie is at his best when he writes songs for a mainstream audience, and he knows this.Unfortunately the record companies make do something alien to his natural inclinations. I've read in interviews where he has said that very thing.Yngwie is in between a rock and a hard place. He is trying to satisfy the wants of his record companies and stay true to his vision. He is failing miserably. But i believe we will see a return to the old Yngwie eventually. When Yngwie is good he has no equal. So i will be patient.

It's already been said that this is album is the same as any previous release, and that can't be further from the truth. Yngwie Malmsteen must think that either his fans enjoy hearing the same guitar solos played over and over again, or he's not bothered as long as the bank roll is still coming in. As for the song writing, this album displays a still amatuerish as ever style. Malmsteen was good when he was in Alcatraz and his fret work of the first few albums of Rising Force are breath taking even to listen to today. Unfortunatley since then he hasn't progressed at all.

Excellent! One of Yngwie's best albums!,

This album is amazing. The sound quality is much better than previous albums. Doogie White is a great singer. It has 15 songs (70 minutes) and all songs are good. The only complaint is that there aren't ballads (except 2 instrumentals: tracks 11&15); most songs are very fast and, after a while, this can become a bit monotonous. My favorite songs are: - Touch The Sky: the best song on the cd. Good keyboard sound. Very "Trilogy-ish", like "You don't Remember...". - Baroque & Roll: one of his best instrumentals ever! It's very similar to Far Beyond The Sun. - Valhalla: very strong, great solo and vocals. - Majestic Blue: slow instrumental. Simply beatiful. Other good songs are: Valley of Kings (with a very catchy guitar riff), Razor Eater, Ship Of Fools(nice introduction),Iron Clad (great chorus), Stronghold(mid-tempo rocker with big chords), Mad Dog(fast and powerful, good vocals). I don't know why they didn't put the japanese bonus "Nobody's Fool" in the cd. I found it in Kazaa, and it would be one of the best songs. It has a great distorted riff in the chorus (very similar to "On The Run Again" from Marching Out).

I didnt like it from the first i put it on my cd player . give it time and you will love it. ( this is definetly different album from the others ).i bought "attack" with out the bonus track . with the bonus track i would give it 5 stars. i like malmsteens music very mouch and the band made good job in attack.the vocalist is a good singer , maybe would make the best for a band like rainbow but not for malmsteen.malmsteen has the talent to make his music and melodics perfect .( its depend alot on his vocalist).the sound of "attack" is perfect and i enjoy to hear it ,( not like malmsteens last albums that had sounds problems).4.5 stars. mast have for his fans.malmsteens playing/melodics are also perfect specially hear track 6 ( one of his best) . the singing melodics missing something but after hearing "attack" again and again i found it a good cd after all.( the returning of words disturb me in many songs ( maybe it wasn`t the vocalist fault after all. differend but good . in one word- "attack". tal avraham |
