Book Description

Avoid overwhelm, deal with interruptions, and enjoy your best life.

The new time management is activity management.  An activity is anything we do.  It's a phone call, responding to an email or drop-in visitor, a work-related task, an unplanned meeting, exercising, spending time with family or friends. It’s even eating, sleeping or an emotion that we feel.  We engage in an activity every second of every day.

The activities we decide to do (or not do) can either direct us towards our goals in life or drive our stress level up to the point of overwhelm where we can’t seem to get anything accomplished.

Most old, established time management strategies do not fit today’s high intensity, rapidly changing, fast-paced environment.  What we need is fast, flexible, easysolutions. You’ll find them in this book.

What I thought was original about this book:
1. Rather than just "saying no" to people as part of time management, it elaborates on the importance of how to say no as well as taking the time to say no in a cordial fashion.
2. Rather than just "saying no" to people, you have to say no to yourself making sure you are not choosing to do things that are time wasters.
3. Work-life balance is not what it use to be, e.g. now 24 hour access with e-mails, i-phones, etc.

What I liked about the book:
1. Good lists, e.g. Self Imposed Focus Breakers (a lengthly list that includes "Socializing," "Surfing the net",) Another good list is System Imposed Breakers (e.g. computer problems due to lack of IT support).
2. 101 Productivity Strategies (many good pearls worth reading and re-reading).

What the book did not emphasize enough is that
1. You really need to develop the discipline to maintain time management. Perhaps copying the list on Self imposed Focus Breakers and keeping it in one's Day Planner.
2. Time management really requires exercise and maintenance; it is not a habit that can just be learned in my view. Perhaps a companion web site, or a format in which there is an appendix in the book with lists might be a good idea.

What I think is difficult in terms of writing a review.
1. Self help books for the most part seem difficult to review since they have many similarities to one another.
2. It might make more sense to review 2 or 3 self-help books at a time on the same subject (in this case time management) and perhaps rate or rank them against one another. The way car magazines will review 4 automobiles from one category in one article comes to mind as a way of reviewing these types of books.

This Kindle ebook is all about managing our lives so as best to capitalize on three precious gifts - time, energy and choice. In an interesting and inspirational manner it helps us to examine everything that we are doing (or not doing) and to isolate those areas which are making our lives less than fruitful.

While it comes with excellent recommendations from all kinds of CEOs, academics and motivators, it is what this ebook has to say to the ordinary person like myself that is the real key to its value. If we are unhappy with how we are navigating our way through life, this ebook sets out to show us how to organize ourselves better. Even those who are wholly satisfied with how they're handling things, and are just reading it out of curiosity, are bound to find a useful tip here and there to try out.

No matter who we are or how wealthy, we only have a finite amount of time in which to do the things we would like to, and to fit them into our schedule amongst the things we must do. This Kindle ebook provides us with the tools to increase our productivity in the most efficient way, while still being able to enjoy our lives. Among the many ebooks on personal organization, it stands out for me because of its practical and inspirational advice.

I think this would be a good time management book for someone who had read very few or no books on time management.

I have read a lot of books on time management and read additional ones in hopes of learning new things, but I didn't find that many new ideas in this book.

Here are things I liked about the book: recognizes that many people use a mixture of electronic and paper time management methods, acknowledges that computers and the internet did not get rid of paper piles, has a very down-to-earth tone, tries to keep its ideas simple and usable, and offers 101 numbered ideas beyond its basic system.

What I didn't like: an initial suggestion that I start six "buckets" or to-do lists, based on different classifications of tasks, and then code the tasks red, green, yellow or gray. That may be less complicated than some of the top-heavy time management systems I have seen in the past, but it is still perhaps more than I can manage.

The book did inspire me to start reviewing my thoughts on time management, and being more disciplined about it again.

"Attack Your Day" by Mark and Trapper Woods is a good read for anyone wanting to be more productive in their lives. Whether you are a business executive, homemaker, educator, pastor, employee, self-employed, student, or whatever, there is something in the book that will benefit you.

The book is around 200 pages and contains good points such as:

1. A key part of choosing activities is refusing activities - learn to say no!
2. 6 types of "time buckets" we can use to better utilize our time.
3. Multi-tasking is overrated (I say AMEN to that!) and is really only useful when doing mindless activities (opening mail while listening to the radio, for example).
4. Instead, try alternate tasking(be 100% engaged in what you are doing at the moment).
5. Apply the principle of flexicuting - alternate intense activities requiring full effort with activities that are easier and require less effort.
6. 4 techniques for saying no to a request.
7. Several practical and helpful suggestions are in the book's last section and contain good pointers such as: having time for yourself, 4 ways to not stress over necessary interruptions, being in a bad mood is a time waster, sometimes you have to walk away from something and return to it later, and being careful of too much structure that does not allow for relaxation.

Again, while the book is a relatively quick read, there is useful information in here for anyone.
