4.0 out of 5 stars Bizzare, Evil, Creepy, and Brilliant!
This is not one of Elfman's best scores but is amazing! The main titles give a sense of a millitary atmosphere and chaos. The ones I found most interesting are The Main Title, The Landing, and the eerie Ungodly Experiments. The best use of the choir in this cd is Ungodly Experiments. The rest of the cd is ok. The score for Mars Attacks is remarkable. Even the song by...

Tim Burton and Danny Elfman together again! (after a brief spat that caused Burton to hire Howard Shore for "Ed Wood".) I have given this album only three stars because much of it really is not just a good listening album; this is one of those that is clearly meant to accompany the movie. I do, however, have nothing but high praise for his Opening Titles, a composition that successfully presents an atmosphere of comic tragedy (if such a mix is possible). The use of one single musical phrase, repeated, re-orchestrated, made louder and more violent, for two and a half minutes is musical creativity at its highest. (Only Ravel and his "Bolero" comes as close to such complex simplicity.) My advice: Find it on sale; used copies at an auction, etc.

I love this score because it has action, mystery, and space all rolled into one,Danny Elfman used different instruments in this score that were indeed a brilliant idea, not only do they sound great but they are used in only a way that Danny Elfman can use them!Truly a terrific score the greatest song on the whole album is the Intro/MainTitles,an ausome song.If you liked the score to "Men In Black" this is pretty simular and you will love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Brilliant Score from a Brilliant man, November 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mars Attacks! Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Mars Attacks was an OK movie, enjoyable, but nothing wonderful. As with many of Elfman's scores, this one made the film much better. The main title theme is awsome, it contains a sense of power, evil, and madcap mania all wrapped into one track. It is with out a doubt the highlight of the CD, but luckily the other tracks are cleverly laced with it as well. This is not Elfmans best, but it's still awsome.

As with the film, the attempt here is to spoof sci-fi works of the 50s and 60s. This CD is a lot of fun. I love that leitmotif--that tadataDA tadataDA march of quasi war music which is played in a few of these tracks. Ungodly Experiments is my favorite and I wish there were more of those tracks of electronic space music, heavy on the thermin. Then at the end, there is a tune of Slim Whitman whom I only recognize from late night informercials, but the song is really campy and cute. First I thought it was a Hawaiian love song, then realized it must be along the line of an old cowboy song. The CD finishes with Tom Jones belting out in his sexiest lounge lizard style.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely LOVE this!, December 16, 2010
This review is from: Mars Attacks! Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I am the biggest Mars Attacks! fan I know. Or anyone knows, for that matter. I fell in love with the film the second time I viewed it, and part of my love was aimed towards Danny Elfman's music. One of the greatest things about the film was the soundtrack. It's weird, it's cool, it's beautiful. I'm a big Elfman fan as it is, and this is my favorite soundtrack he's ever done, which makes me a sinner in the eyes of some hard-core Elfman fans. I guess I'm just a sucker for a theremin.

Even if you haven't seen the movie, if you listen to the soundtrack, you can almost visualize what went on. A must have for any Mars Attacks! fan, and I HIGHLY recommend it to any Danny Elfman fan, whether you've seen the film or not.

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical mix of Burton sounds, August 22, 1999

Not so interesting as his other works (Beetlejuice being the highpoint perhaps), MARS ATTACKS still offers an eclectic mix of bizarre tunes that confound and amaze.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Repetitive, August 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mars Attacks! Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I agree that the mood created by Elfman's score is suitably eerie and alien-like, but for an album the music is not so effective. The tracks become far to similar to one another, although the main melody - the opening tracks - is really memorable, and, dare I say it, Jones' Not Unusual is actually pretty brilliant.

Danny Elfman has brought us some of the coolest music from the dark and bizarre movies from Batman and Beetlejuice to this. The Mars Attacks CD is a must for those who enjoy music by Danny Elfman.
