Book Description

August 1997
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in the Classroom provides educators with a complete guide on how to deal effectively with students with attention deficits in their classrooms. The book emphasizes practical applications for teachers to use that will facilitate the success of students, both academically and socially, in a school setting. The book is organized into nine chapters and six appendixes. Chapter 1 is a comprehensive case study of a student with ADHD. Chapter 2 provides an overview of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and includes the legal mandates for providing services to this group of children. A definition of ADHD is provided, and a brief review of the possible causes of this condition is included. One section of the chapter focuses on multicultural issues and ADHD, an especially important topic for our schools, which reflect ever-increasing diversity. Chapter 3 presents information on how to assess ADHD. Existing techniques, ways for teachers to interpret the requirements for identification in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition, and formal, standardized assessment instruments are described. Chapter 4 provides practical, comprehensive suggestions for managing the classroom environment. Group-management techniques are presented, along with suggestions on how to manage the physical environment to best deal with students with ADHD. One section is devoted to behavior-management techniques, and practical ideas are presented about how to use these techniques with children with ADHD. A checklist in the appendix is provided as an example of interventions based on specific characteristics. Chapter 5 discusses instructional accommodations for children with ADHD. Teacher planning, grouping strategies, material modifications, the use of homework, and testing modifications are presented in this chapter. How to develop student-regulated strategies, including self-management
