3.0 out of 5 stars On the whole... mediocre. (2.75 stars)
I liked the first Atticus compilation, with its great songs by Finch, Alkaline Trio, BossTones, the Movielife, Glassjaw, Madcap, and others, so I had my friend burn me a copy of Atticus 2. With the quality of the first and a seemingly solid lineup of bands i knew, I assumed it would be good.

Wow, was I disappointed.

The lineup didn't deliver. The Finch song was chaotic (in a bad way), the H2O song sounded nothing like the NYHC band that used to be "Faster Than the World," the Suicide Machines have lost the ska-core edge that made them amazing, Dropkick Murphys just sound bad, Alkaline Trio sounds pretty bad live, and even the oft-great Lagwagon has sounded better. All this plus a little too much emo (Further Seems Forever, Matchbook Romance, etc.) that's OK if you're into that (which I'm not).

The CD is saved by outstanding tracks from Rocket From the Crypt, Thrice, Transplants, and the Mighty Mighty BossTones (my all-time favorite band-- so maybe I'm a little biased). Jets to Brazil, Rise Against, Taking Back Sunday and Slick Shoes are other good bands with solid contributions. I was pleasantly surprised by the Blink182 track, which was decent coming from a band who often annoys the [heck] out of me. Lastly, Down by Law (a band I know little about) is very good, sounding much like FTTW-era H2O.

I recommend this comp basically because it's cheap and some of the songs are worth it. If possible, have a friend burn it for you.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Atticus: Dragging the Lake II (Audio CD)
This cd is pretty good, but just not as amazingly awesome as Dragging the Lake I. I still love this cd,blink rocks so does TBS and Box Car Racer (and whoever said they did not like I Feel So sucks!!) and Maxeen and Rise Against and Jets to Brazil and Dropkick Murphys.. oh who am I kidding every band on this cd rocks. But I like the 1st one a little better.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far..., March 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Atticus: Dragging the Lake II (Audio CD)
...so good. I've listened to about half of DTL 2, and I like what I've heard so far. Not sure if I'll wind up liking this as much as the first, but I'll give it a chance! Lots of good bands, some I'm hearing for the first time. I'll probably go out & pick up some of the bands' cd's as I did last time (Finch, Midtown, etc.) Thanks to you guys at Atticus! Good work and don't EVER stop rawkin'!

5.0 out of 5 stars dont be mislead..., October 10, 2003
This review is from: Atticus: Dragging the Lake II (Audio CD)
since i always read these review when looking at cds, maybe i was a little mislead by these reviews. i didnt even know if i should bother with this cd. well i did get this album, and im glad - it was really worth it. this thing is sweet. i think the album is 5 star material but only a 4 compared to the predecessor. i've found myself asking "does it really possess that warm Atticus-y goodness?" i dont know. it just seems like theres not that same variety that included popier-punk in it. i think this album is a little heavier, which isnt a bad thing. i gave it a five because to many other people underrated it. so if you liked the first one, get this one, you never know, if you're like me, youll like it anyway-this cd rocks.

I'm going to tell you a little about each song...

Rocket From The Crypt - I'm Not Invisible - Good song to start off the album with.

Hot Water Music - Remedy - Not a great song, but if you like bands like Rancid then you'll like this one.

Thrice - To Awake To Avenge The Dead - Amazing song, that is all

Finch - Worms Of The Universe - I was dissapointed with this song by Finch, i have What It Is To Burn and they can do much better.

Dropkick Murphys - This is a really good song with an Irish Punk type sound.

Blink 182 - Don't Tell me It's Over - Now if you like pop-punk, this song is for you, not one of Blinks best songs though.

Sparta - Vacant Skies - I didn't like this song very much, I think its pretty boring

Slick Shoes - Once Again - Personally, this could be the best song on this CD

Dillinger Four - Noble Stabbings - This song is ok, not great but ok

Suicide Machines - All My People - This is one of those annoying songs that you listen to over and over again.

Lagwagon - E.dagger - This song is pretty good but Lagwagon can do better.

Maxeen - Soleil - This song is good because it doesnt sound like many songs i've ever heard.

Further Seems Forever - Pride War - This is a good song from this good band.

Jets To Brazil - William Tell Override - This is one of my least favorite songs on this album. It just isnt good.

Boxcar Racer - All Systems Go - This is a good song with a good message. Amazing drumming by Travis Barker

Transplants - One Seventeen - This song is ok, many songs on this CD are better than it. Again amazing drumming by Travis Barker.

H2O - All We Want - I think this is the second best song on the cd. Just behind Slick Shoes.

Taking Back Sunday - You're So Last Summer - This song I've known beofre i bought this cd, it has AMAZING lyrics. Or i seem to think so.

Rise Against - Heaven Knows - This is a good punk rock song. Pretty fast.

Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Jacknife To A Swan - What can I say, amazing ska song.

Matchbook Romance - Greatest Fall - I personally like the way this song sounds. That is all

Hot Rod Circuit - Misled - This bands singer sounds like New Found Glory and Starting Line, it sounds like those two bands put together.

Down By Law - Next To Go - Really good song.

Over My Dead Body - Be There - This song is too short so you can't really get into it, so i dont really like this track.

Bane - Some Came Running - This song has too much yelling in it, if you like that kind of music then this song is good.

Alkaline Trio - Crawl Live - This song is good and they play it really good live.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but why buy a compilation?, March 29, 2003
By
Tom (Upstate NY USA) - See all my reviews

I have known about just about every band on this CD and own just about all of the CD's from them. Some of the tracks on this CD have never been released, so that is a plus... but why buy a compilation?

I mean you only get one song from each band. Unless you are only a fan of radio punk (example: Blink 182/ Sum 41/ Green Day) then this is good for you. But if you are like me, and know of most of these bands already, then just go out and get the entire CD of that artist.
