Book Description

The next chapter in the struggle for equal rights begins!

Hunter Gamble is an idealistic young attorney in a very special area of the practice: arcane defense. Funded by enigmatic billionaire Charles McClain and aided by shy-but-energetic research attorney Kirsten Harper, he's making the world a better place--one vampire, zombie, or werewolf client at a time. After all, they deserve their day in court too, right?

When a young zombie walks into Hunter's office accused of murder (by brain-eating), Hunter's idealism is tested as never before as he struggles to secure the man's freedom. To do so, he must square off against a savvy and ambitious district attorney, contend with a judge who is deeply biased against arcanes, and stand up to a human-supremacist group which will stop at nothing--not even Hunter's own death--to see his client convicted.

Kirkus Reviews:
"...Abramowitz writes with punchy dialogue, sonic action and vivid description. His characters sing, bellow, shout and stumble; one even flies through a public bathroom into a fancy gala, shattering the door behind her. There's never a dull moment as Abramowitz earns his high-concept theme with tight dialogue and full characters who often display as many human vulnerabilities as they do supernatural abilities. Danger shadows each chapter and the courtroom battles will have the reader flipping pages in anticipation. Fortunately, the characters' witty exchanges and Gamble's inner monologue provide a measure of levity to the more intense scenes.
A surprisingly fresh, funny and fiery mystery that envelopes the reader in a uniquely colorful world."

5.0 out of 5 stars Supernatural Legal Thriller November 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Disclaimer: I received an advanced readers copy of Atticus For The Undead from the author for review on my blog.

This book was a treat!

It is well written, the characters are interesting, intelligent, funny, and endearing in their own ways.

My initial reaction, to just the first chapter, was, "hmmm, this is interesting!" From there, it only got better. This is not your typical supernatural story. It is an intelligent take on what would happen if the "real world" were suddenly made aware of the "supernatural world" living among us... or perhaps I should say "Arcane world," and the legal implications that could arise.

Atticus was an awesome book and not just for fans of the urban fantasy/paranormal genres. Those who enjoy a good legal thriller might just be willing to take a trip on the darker side of things and embrace the wide literary world of zombies, witches, and magical creatures because the author has written them so well that you don't realize it's not real!

Kudos to John Abramowitz for his creative genius and exceptional writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Tale! February 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
When John sent me this book to review he brazenly stated, "I'm fairly confident that if you start this one, you won't be able to stop. :)" I thought, okay, we'll see. Well, I'm happy to say he was absolutely right! I received it at one o'clock this morning, intending to read it tomorrow. Yeah, right! It is now five-twenty in the morning and I just finished it. Yes, it was that good!

Hunter Gamble is a lawyer who makes a living from defending arcanes--paranormals, who are allowed to co-exist with humans in his world. And he's very good at it.

Samuel Pollard is a zombie accused of murder and he hires Hunter to defend him. So begins a fast-paced, haunting tale of unforgettable drama--one you won't want to put down.

John Abramowitz has written a futuristic version of legal thriller mixed with paranormal. This novel is one of the best I've read in years. It's looking like he has a brilliant writing career ahead of him.

Atticus for the Undead (Legal Fiction Series) takes place after an event (?) referred to as the Unveiling. Apparently as a result of the Unveiling Vampires, Zombies, Witches and other arcane beings are living side-by-side with the rest of humanity. No further details of how this came about are given and this is not book 2 in a series (believe me, I checked).
I enjoyed the book and all the characters were all well done. The ending was unexpected but fit perfectly with the story. It was only unexpected because I didn't expect the author to take it in that direction; well done.
Had there been some explanation of the unveiling and more development of the characters (their past and relationships - specifically the main character and his father) I would be giving this book a higher rating. There was too much alluded to without explanation. I hope the author writes a prequel to fill in the missing pieces.

This was an enjoyable read. I never thought I'd try a legal thriller, but it's accessible and has the paranormal/zombie element, which takes a lot of imagination to pull off. To me, it's become a unique piece that can be used draw many uncomfortable parallels to our own world.

Video review short version: It's funny, has limited legalese and it's even got a teenaged witch. Named Sabrina. Very cute.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ending is a kick in the teeth, wow, loved it! April 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Book Info: Genre: Urban Fantasy/Horror/Legal Thriller
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: Fans of horror and legal fiction and urban fantasy
Trigger Warnings: violent death

My Thoughts: I've had this book for over a year. Recently I was approached by a friend who runs blog tours to ask if I'd consider reviewing the 2nd book in this series, Identity Theft from an ARC copy. Since I already had this and another book by this author, and they sounded like the sort of thing I'd enjoy, I agreed. So, here we go!

This book's ending is a total kick in the teeth and completely unexpected, but wow, what a great story! Hunter is a very interesting character, full of idealism and anger over what he perceives to be injustice. I saw a lot of parallels with any type of civil-rights action you might consider: racial relations, GLBTQ issues, what have you. The book makes no secret that these issues are being addressed via the idea that people are prejudiced against those they perceive as "abnormal". It's a very typical human reaction: if someone is different, that makes people afraid, and what humans fear, they seek to destroy. Age-old idea. As such it is often very uncomfortable to read the book, and that is yet another reason I enjoyed it so much; I like a story that will make me question and think and consider. So, a high recommendation from me, whether you enjoy horror, urban fantasy, or legal thrillers, this combines the best of the lot. Check it out, and watch for my review of the upcoming book Identity Theft next.

Disclosure: I picked up this book a bit over a year ago when it was on the Amazon KDP program because it sounded like the kind of thing I'd enjoy. All opinions are my own.

This is a different kind of zombie story.
I'm not familiar with To Kill a Mockingbird, so the Atticus reference was lost on me. As well, the cover is very subtle. Read more

More About the Author

I am a long, tall Texan (very, very tall) born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. Educated at Grinnell College in the great state of Iowa, I consider Iowa my second home state, and keep on good terms with both by eating barbecue AND corn. When I'm not watching way too much sci-fi/fantasy TV or reading similar books (or working, obviously), you can usually find me reading the news or playing video games. I currently live in Austin, Texas, where I work as a lawyer and author.

Everything I really need to know about storytelling, I learned from Joss Whedon (who influences my work), but I'm also a huge fan of suspense thrillers (which also influence my work), musicals (which, if I could write a musical novel, I'd be all over that), and parentheses (of which there are way too many in this bio).

As of April 16, 2013, I will be the author of four full-length novels (Weaver, The Void, Atticus for the Undead, and Identity Theft), as well as The Antlerbury Tales, a short story.

I plan to spend 2013 polishing off The Weaver Saga, which has 2 more books in it. Expect Book 3, "Flames," soon.

Stay tuned for more exciting projects in the months to come!
