This book has good ideas-it's a short, simple read. It's another book about thinking positive thoughts and looking at your fears and confronting them. The included CD skipped on the 8th track which had the 'big secret' ..so I am not fully sure what that is. I survived.
Using this and other positive thoughts I opened myself up and am going on a 2nd date with a girl...

This little book packs a big punch! It takes less than a day to actually read but to re-read and do the exercises over time is the key. The book actually comes attached with a CD that parellels all 8 chapters. I think it would be best to have a side notebook, pen and journal so that you can always revist down the road and see your progress over time.

I highly recomment this book, not just to attract genuine love but to get to know yourself better. Dr. Gay Hendricks and Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks lets you know that who you are is based upon life interactions at an early age; especially those with your parents and how they acted.

This book will help you look past the symptoms and find out the cause of what you need to improve.

Using this and other positive thoughts I opened myself up and am going on a 2nd date with a girl I met a few weeks ago. So basically the message is to think, percieve and believe and you'll get it. I know I had and still do have fears and apprehensions about stopping 'the seach' for 'the one' --this book assisted in hammering into my head that I am the one who is behind the lack in my life- and if I REALLY want something- I need to focus on it, define it, let go of fears and go get it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK book....some may find it more useful than others (Depending on your mindset), September 7, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is a relatively short read (around 80 pages) and while some of the tips seemed to be a bit abstract to me, there were some valuable things I took away from the book. If you're the kind of person who is into `journaling', this book will probably hold a bit more appeal for you, as they recommend several exercises involving writing down thoughts, feelings and goals. The most valuable parts of the book, in my opinion, were the portions involving thinking thru deal-breakers and requirements in a relationship - non-negotiable qualities in a significant other, you're looking to avoid or are absolute must-haves - the authors theorize that oftentimes, early life experiences program us to self-sabotage and set ourselves up for relationship failure. An example of this would be fear of abandonment, which might cause people to `push' others away, so that they themselves control the terms of a breakup; or, if a person had an alcoholic parent, they might want to entirely avoid anyone who has any type of vice.

A major point of the book is that you need to consciously change your mindset, to `open' yourself up to love, and commit to finding it everywhere, which to me seems a bit obvious, if forcing the issue a bit. It's probably an essential part of the process, but on the other hand, with a lot of popular self-help things these days (like "The Secret"), it seems like we're starting to hear from all over the place that we can simply `will' ourselves to have whatever we want, which may or may not be the case. On the other hand, the book does encourage you to take responsibility for your own life, which is always a good idea.

The CD runs about 78 minutes and contains meditation-and-affirmation type exercises (conveniently indexed as tracks), that are touched on in the book. I'd recommend reading the book thru first, before listening to the CD, because I listened to the disc first (thinking it was more or less the audio of the book, which it is not) and it made little sense, until I read the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good quick read to help you become more introspective about your love life., October 21, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Fuzzy Wuzzy's Summary:
**** Recommended with warm fuzzies.

Although there were a lot of potential topics that were not adequately covered by this little book (thus the removal of one star), I found the information covered by the husband and wife team to be fairly useful, albeit some of the advice may definitely be construed as everyday common sense. As with many aspects of life, some of us may go through life just assuming that we know how to handle all life situations, and when it comes to love, we may expect that love will just come naturally once we find "the one". But we often do not stop and introspect about what we are actually doing (and not doing) correctly, why we are doing something, and why things do not work out as we had hoped. The value of this book and accompanying CD is that it takes you through a series of steps/lessons to help you clarify, write down, and consider what you think about yourself and other people, and how you are approaching (and avoiding) love. This was a helpful read. I have found less useful fluff padded inside some self-help books on love that had more than twice the number of pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good relationships start with ourselves, August 22, 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Doctors Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks' new book is based on the premise that likes attract likes. Therefore, in order to bring real love, we must first become the kind of person we envision our potential partners to be. "Attracting Genuine Love" is focused on self-improvement through the use of meditation, visualization, affirmations and writing exercises that encourage us to do the soul searching needed to face those deeply rooted patterns of behaviors and thought that prevent us from creating a healthy relationship.

This book contains thirteen short chapters. The first six chapters help us discover and deal with what the Hendrickses call "unconscious commitments" which are the basis of our fears and negative thinking. In the next four chapters, the authors show us how to design a genuine loving relationship by identifying "three absolute no's" (the problematic aspects in our past relationships) and "three yes's" (the qualities we want to nurture in our next relationship). They also give us four rules that function as the foundation for a conscious and loving relationship. To get us started on the right foot, the last two chapters give advice on how to make a genuine connection when we meet new people and on how to develop our ability to replace old, established negative attitudes with positive ones. The accompanying CD contains 8 short-guided meditation sessions. Each track lasts between 6 to 15 minutes. For these sessions, you'll need a quiet place where you can relax and for the writing exercises, a notebook or journal and a mirror.

I found "Attracting Genuine Love" to be very easy to read. It's not bogged down with statistics or technical jargon. Instead the authors concentrate on encouraging the readers to work at their own pace on becoming aware of the blocks that stand between them and a positive relationship. Having read the book and done the meditations exercises on the CD only once, it's hard for me to affirm the success of this program because for it to work, I believe one needs constant repetition and practice in order to internalize the affirmations the Hendrickses teach in their book and CD. It also depends on how easily and how willing one is to connect with his/her inner self. And there are many aspects in a relationship that cannot be willed away with just meditations. However, this book and CD are a good start toward working one's way to a healthy relationship. I found the Hendrickses' four rules and the three absolute no's and yes's to be very sound advice because in the end, a positive and loving relationship is a reflection on how honest we are with ourselves and with others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book and CD help you find love, July 26, 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Attracting Genuine Love combines a book with a CD program to allow readers to also use guided imagery and meditations to help break down the barriers to attracting real and healthy love.Although the book tells much of what other "law of attraction" love books do, the CD is what makes this a special package, one that both delivers its message in words and in real experiences of going within to see why we keep attracting the wrong stuff, so we can learn how to attract the right stuff.

This is a step by step program that is easy to follow, but requires some honest journaling and soul searching. If you truly want a loving relationship with someone who is healthy and functional, it is well worth the work, both inner and outer. The authors are a perfect example, too, of how true, long lasting love can be a possibility, if one does the right things to attract it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only 90 pages plus CD but priceless relationship info!, November 7, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Gay and Kathryn Hendrick, PhDs are wizards at explaining how to change your programming about love. What makes this a fun book to read is that they include fill in the blank sectios where you can can acknowledge you and others in life and also release false beliefs. There's section for example where you can explain why you deeply appreciate YOURSELF.
The chapters are very short but very wise and include

Ch 1: The Power of Commitment
Ch 2: WholeBody Learning
Ch 3 Learning How to OVercome Fear
Ch 4 From Unlucky in Love to Lucky in Love
Ch 5 Loving Yourself Unconditionally
Ch 6 A soul-shifting Commitment
Ch 7 Designing Your Next Relationship (REALLY GREAT chapter)
Ch 8 Real-world Rule #1 BE REAL
Ch 9: Real-world Number 2 -Lead with Appreciateion
Ch 10 Real World number three -- Listen without interrupting people, including yourself
Ch 11: Real-World Rule Number Four: Practice Impeccable Integrity
Ch 12: How to Make a Genuine Connection in the First 10 seconds when you are attracted to someone (REVEALING CHAPTER)
Ch 13 Reprogramming Your Bio-computer
and an appendix

At the end of this short book they say something very astute-- if you bought a car or a new computer you'd get a training or info manual - in life you don't get that with a new relationship or in renewing your current relationship. So Gay and Kathryn give you a mini-manual to fill out -- kind of fun too!

Plus of course there is the CD too -- so this is a lovely gift for YOU or anyone you love or a birthday or anniversary or??? ENJOY

3.0 out of 5 stars two authors, each with an approach, October 15, 2009
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
There are lots of books on love but Gay and Katherine each present their best knowledge here.

Unfortunately I found myself agreeing with about 50% of the book as a result. It wasn't possible to attribute each chapter to Gay or Katherine - some were new ideas and new thinking while others were just plain common sense and rules of dating.

The new thinking section was the most helpful - I found it let me put myself in the other person's shoe. There were areas that were not touched at all which is why it's probably not the best book on love.

People need to know love versus lust, the difference, causes, and how to identify each. Goal setting was also not covered well in the book. In a relationship these are particularly important because men and women all too often can get the lust/love equation confused.

Some people looking for a serious relationship need to know when they are experiencing signs of each. The book could have contributed more to recognizing true love versus passing lust.

That and the same old relationship advice made it a slow read
