This CD contains 1989 British performances by conductor Ronald Corp leading the New London Orchestra, an ensemble with which I am not familiar but who do a very qood job throughout. Although I have some criticisms of the "Aubade," this is a recording which you can be confident is well executed from a performance perspective with very good sound engineering.

Corp leads three French works, dating between 1905 through 1947, which range from the reasonable well known (the Aubade) to the obscure (the Reynaldo Hahn). The CD is programmed in reverse chronological order, starting off with Francis Poulenc's 1947 Sinfonietta, a 30-minute long four-movement work. The Sinfonietta is attractive and light, in the neoclassical style Poulenc had been exploring in his instrumental works from the last two decades (his vocal music is very different in character and intent, a testament to the complexity of this talented and original composer). While I found the finale veering uncomfortably close to 1940s movie music, the Sinfonietta for the most part is interesting and smooth. The 1929 Aubade for piano and wind instruments accompanied a ballet about the goddess Diane at its first premiere, and while it can be superficially classed with the Sinfonietta in terms of general style, it is a more acerbic, adventurous work that reflects many traits of the neoclassicism in the 1920s. The orchestra is joined by pianist Julian Evans for the Aubade, and Evans proves a vivacious and committed soloist.

Especially wanted the Reynaldo Hahn selection. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. I had never heard of him or his music before. I was so pleased to
discover such an outstanding recording. Coincidently, the Poulenc selection was just as welcome. Amazon made me very happy offering this outstanding
disc. This one's a real treasure.
