4.0 out of 5 stars A Vivid Sense of Reality June 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In the short story "Slave Auction", Katrina Parker Williams gives readers an intense portrayal of the horrifying experience of the slave auction. Horatio, a young boy,is separated from his mother and is transported to a plantation where much awaits him. There is an element of suspense in the story that is unexpected and yet given our historical understanding of many of the intricacies of that "peculiar institution" that plagued African Americans, is all too expected. There will always be great sadness for readers who allow themselves to be exposed to the horrors of slavery but we are appreciative when a story does provide a small element of comfort which this story does. "Slave Auction" is a really great short story and the writing is such that readers will walk away feeling that they were there traveling down the road fearful of their destiny, up on the auction block being examined like objects at an antique road show.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Story! June 21, 2011

This is a short story that packs a lot of punch. I am going to try and not give too much away. To me this was a story mostly about the emotional and mental hardships of slavery as seen by a four year old boy who gets ripped away from his mother and sent to a plantation far away. Williams writing is both plain(a good thing) and powerful at the same time. I think this style of writing is hard to accomplish and Williams does it well. My only complaint is that the story was not long enough because I am eager to know what happens to all the characters in the future.

This is a well written story about a tough historical subject - slavery. It follows a 4 year old male who is separated from his family after the master dies. It will tug at your heart strings.
