A Decent Compilation - But Not Essential,

... unless, of course, you're a devoted fan of this Country entertainer from Spring Fork, Missouri (born October 4, 1929) who burst onto the scene in 1957 at age 28 with Auctioneer, a # 9 Country and # 19 Pop Top 100 that January on Dot 15503 b/w I Fell In Love with A Pony-Tail. The thing is, he wouldn't see another hit single until late 1961 with Walk On By, and by that time he was with Mercury Records.
What this release from Bear Family does is pull together the contents of the LP Dot issued in March 1966 (Dot DLP-3693), long after he had left the label for Mercury, followed by Warner Brothers (where he was when the Dot album was issued), then Kapp, Decca and finally ABC/Dot to complete the circle. Tracks 1 to 8, 11 and 12 are from that Dot album, while 9,10, 13 and 15 were sides he had recorded there but never had released until this Bear CD came along. The versions of Auctioneer and I Fell In Love With A Pony Tail are the same ones that Dot released as that single back in 1957. The sound quality is excellent and, as I said above, if you are a devoted fan of Leroy Van Dyke's music (he registered 19 hit singles on the Country charts to 1977, three of which crossed over to the Pop charts), then this is a 5-star release.
