From School Library Journal
Grade 7-9-Eighteen-year-old Ivy Nesbitt leaves Maine and heads west in disgrace, misery, and poverty after learning of her father's embezzling, his fatal heart attack, and news that her fiance has deserted her. Being a schoolmarm in a mining community, she offers her students compassion, warmth, and an amiable place to learn. She is well respected and liked, but all of this changes with the arrival of her former fiance, who tracks her to Last Chance, CA, and reveals a secret she wished no one to know. This isn't a particularly suspenseful book, nor a heart-throbbing romance, but the frontier setting is well portrayed, particularly in the sheltering of old-fashioned ways. Average fare for the paperback shelves.?Bambi L. Dunn, Mustang High School, Oklahoma City, OK
