3.0 out of 5 stars Jello Biafra's latest project
This CD has Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) all over it - from the snarly delivery to the ironic lyrics; in a way, it's not far at all from the musical flavor of Jello's work. Needless to say, there's also abundant political and social commentary - the informed, detailed lyrics that make listening all the more rewarding. Admittedly, you won't find anything like the catchy...

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Dead Kennedy fan thinks, October 23, 2009

This review is from: Audacity of Hype (Audio CD)
From one DK fan to all the other DK fans, Audacity of Hype will NOT disappoint!

Hype picks up right where Bedtime for Democracy left off 23 years ago. The production value is superb! The double axe attack, while unexpected, works great! The bass and drums provide a hard edge to the rhythm. Its very obvious that Guantanamo tries to capture some of the DK sound, it works. Gould, Spight, Weiss, Ball capture the genre while leaving there own signature. I like it.

Biafra's vocals and prose are on par with DK's Bedtime and Frankenchrist albums. The politicizing is not as mature as his spoken word albums, but neither were the DK albums. Besides, you should already know Biafra's social stance.

The album art, poster insert and lyric collage brought back memories. I hope a new generation will discover this gem, and its socially relevant message.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just awesome!!, October 22, 2009

Definitely the best release of 2009. With a twin guitar attack Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine sounds lile DK's on meth. Billy Gould recorded it but has been replaced by Andrew Weiss (Rollins Band) due to his return to Faith No More. This CD is highly recommended!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, June 18, 2010
This review is from: Audacity of Hype (Audio CD)
Wow, I agree with anyone who says listening to this album made them feel like a teenager again. This is a throwback to the DK days for sure. Might as well call this Bedtime for Democracy part 2 while you're at it. There is one song that I am not all that thrilled with but it's a small complaint. Even 20+ years later Jello Biafra is still the man, any Jello/DK fans out there need to pick this up or d/l the mp3s. It's been a long time coming, now I just need The Guantanamo School of Medicine to tour the US and come to Florida.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Jello record since the DK's, February 25, 2010

This album rocks! Jello's got a renewed fire burning or something because this album is just full of energy & attitude. Great music, Lyrics, etc but it's a "fun" sounding record too, I read a review somewhere that said this album's got some of that old school punk rock Detroit sleaze sound to it and that's exactly what it is and it works. It's also nice to hear something new from Jello in 2010, There seems to be less & less sincerity in music (especially punk) this last decade but this cd has me jumping around singing along and I'm happy for that. While I don't agree with a lot of Jello's views it's a breath of fresh air to have him come out with a record like this. Now that it's 2010 I realize how badly needed people like Jello are in this world today, Along with a lot of the other punk rock pioneers of the 1970's/1980's. Nobody else calls people out on their crap anymore, Unless it's fake mainstream tough guy bs. If you're a Dead Kennedys fan you'll love this record and if you're curious to hear what Jello's up to musically these days you'll be gladly surprised. Pick this cd up and support the rabble rousers that are still around raising hell and making us think & laugh. There aren't too many to pick from anymore

Needless to say, there's also abundant political and social commentary - the informed, detailed lyrics that make listening all the more rewarding. Admittedly, you won't find anything like the catchy material from the DK's more memorable output; it would be difficult to find particular songs that stick in your memory. But for combining musical flavor and mood, it's hard to fault this record's over effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars What I've been waiting for., December 28, 2009

Lyrically and vocally reminiscent of old school Dead Kennedys (and f**k East Bay Ray anyway), and musically closer to his collaborations with the Melvins. Really really great energy, and as biting as ever. This is what Jello is supposed to be doing, and bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gaslight!, February 15, 2011

This review is from: Audacity of Hype (Audio CD)
Jello Biafra has supplemented his intriguing spoken word career with a variety of musical projects, but this one should be given the time to blossom on stage and in the studio.

The hardcore attack from guitarists Ralph Spight and Kimo Ball, drummer Jon Weiss and bassist Ralph Spight provide Biafra with the best venue since the one-off "supergroup" No WTO Combo to hammer away with pointed lyrics on the dysfunctional and corrupt political scene. It is no surprise that two of the tracks - "New Feudalism," "Electronic Plantation" - were penned for the No WTO Combo, with live versions released in 2000. The real fun and games inside The Beltway are uncovered on "The Terror of Tinytown" and "Clean As a Thistle." The dungeons of the prison-industrial complex ("Three Strikes") and the quest for everything under the sun ("Strength Thru Shopping") - while slapping down plastic cards in the air-conditioned mega-centers of pop culturism - seize the spotlight on the second half of the album. The anthem for a new century - "I Won't Give Up" - has a gap of around seven minutes after its conclusion for the sonic cliff notes of the proceedings.

The package is complete through the album/CD art and mini-poster that includes the song lyrics. Meet the new boss, indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars rock against Obama, May 7, 2010

Got to love the cover art for starters. A perfect send-up of Shepard Fairey's celebrated Obama Hope poster. I want it on a t-shirt.
Everybody says this latest album by Biafra and company sounds a lot like Dead Kennedys and it does. Since one of my favorite bands of all time is Dead Kennedys and Dead Kennedys is great music I'm happy I bought this cd.
So if you like DK you will like Jello Biafra & the Guantanamo School of Medicine's album, "Audacity of Hype". Which is also a perfect title to parody that public relations political slogan. Also, great name for the band. Great name for the band, great cover art for the cd and great music to play while in your car going to work, hanging out at your place or maybe taking a walk.
Thumbs-up. Good job Jello and everybody.

*******
Also, don't know about you but I've gotten beyond FED-UP with musicians', artists', celebrities' pro-liberal, pro- Democrat, myopic blabber.
And their easy, fashionable, predictable and boring bashing of Republicans.
Yeah man, as if the Democrats are so much better...
The stuff I have heard come out these peoples' mouths. Just one ex. I recently saw a clip of Fat Mike from NOFX say Bill Clinton had a good domestic policy. ??? Maybe for him; he's rich. Bill Clinton is a moderate Republican in terms of policy. Krist Novoselic was a big Obama supporter, like everybody, and he said "we need a multicultural president". Dumb. Obama being black wont help working class black folks when he's busy working for Wall Street.
This kind of naive, misguided nonsense has helped destroy the left in America. So kids think "rockin' against Bush" and voting for a brown man that seems "nice" (I have heard people say that he is a nice man.) will save us.
I voted for O'bummer myself and mostly without illusions. Mostly. I was not expecting much and took the lesser of two evils stance. Not ever again will I do that. He's sucked even more than I didn't Hope for and Changed even less. Sure it is great having a black guy in the White house and it is historically important. But man... shoulda just voted for Cynthia McKinney. No more Democrats.
If only more people were as sensible as a Jello Biafra!
