After doing a little research on waterproof headphones I was very skeptical because of the varied results from users. However, as with anything, I decided to pick the item I thought to be the best and go with it to see for myself. The H2O Audio Surge 2 headphones worked as advertised and did not disappoint. It took me no longer to get setup than it did putting on my goggles. I wound the excess cord around my goggle band and clipped my waterproof iPod shuffle (another outstanding purchase!) to the band as well and off I went. The clarity was perfect for about 35 minutes when I got a little water in my left ear and the sound went out on that side, but the sound and clarity were still there in my right ear (which is the reason I gave only 4 stars). I did stop to clear the water from my left ear and the sound came back. I don't know if that is typical of all waterproof headphones, but I was happy just to hear music while I was submersed! It made my workout ten times more enjoyable than ever before and I found myself wanting to swim for another hour! My recommendation is to try out all the ear buds that come with the headphones to see which is the best fit. Typically, I wear a medium size earbud with headphones but decided to go with the small bud because it seemed to be a better fit and provided a better seal.

If a great waterproof sound system sounds too good to be true, that's because it is. I've had extended experience with this product.

First, the sound quality is actually better than I expected. If you can manage to get a tight seal by ramming those things deep into your ears, the sound is remarkable.

Until the headphones break. And that's the problem. There's a design flaw on the headphone cord that will absolutely break after no more than 30 lap swims. This is my experience with 2 sets of headphones. (The first pair only lasted for about 10 swims.) If you're not swimming laps but are instead doing something more tranquil, this problem may not affect you.

H2Audio is well aware of this design flaw, and has a strategy. The strategy is to replace your 1st set of headphones for free and to not require you send the defective ones back. Sounds like a good deal, right? However, when they break the 2nd time, they will ask you to send both the 1st and 2nd defective sets in. They're banking on the assumption that many people will simply throw the 1st defective pair away. Once that happens, they have escaped from their warranty and you're screwed.

MY ADVICE:

If you really want to have underwater sound, buy this product at a store with an iron-clad, unconditional return policy, like REI. You will need to get the headphones replaced every 1-2 months, so make sure the location is convenient. Perhaps there is another brand that also has good sound and doesn't have the design flaw, but I've got no experience with those.

If you buy them online, H2Audio will continue to replace your headphones for the duration of their year warranty (assuming you keep all the materials and are ready to send them back when asked). It takes quite a long time to get the replacement (the 1st pair took 3-4 weeks). So if you're okay with that arrangement, then good luck to you!

I had the original over-ear H20 headphones, and hated them - they slipped off my ears and I had to re-set them every few laps. I'm happy to report that these are super comfortable, fit nicely in-ear (I used the small size buds) without leakage, and even with a 45-minute swim, I never had to re-adjust. I would buy these again in a heartbeat. Oh yeah, and the sound was very nice: no ambient noise got in.

After reading these reviews, I decided to go with this selection of waterproof earbuds because it offers the different size earbud choices and the fact that having a water tight seal is the most important for sound quality on this type of headphone. Surely one of the choices would fit perfectly, right? Wrong! I have tried all sizes from XS to L and all of them had the same effect, the water tight seal in the inner ear was broke and water got into the headphones. When the water gets in you lose almost all ability to hear the music and it is virtually impossible to get another water tight seal going and you'll spend the rest of your workout wasting time adjusting and trying. I do a half hour of deep water running and then I swim laps for about another half hour. The first half hour of my workout I had no issues with them and the sound quality was great, but keep in mind, I was not under water. For this reason, if you are using them for anything other than swimming, I think they could be a good product. However, I suspect as I started sweating the water tight seal losened up so when I started swimming, the movement through the water was just enough after a few laps to move them so water seeped in. You MUST put them in when your ears and headphones are dry to get the water tight seal or you can forget it. The only difference I found in trying different sizes was that the bigger sizes hurt my hears more because of the pressure created forming the water tight seal in the ear canal, and it didn't prevent the leak from happening. I am going to have to purchase a different pair now and hope for the best with the next ones, because these did not work and I'm out $30 plus shipping. Very disappointed.
