About the Author
Dr. Stanley Alten, Professor Emeritus, developed the audio program for the Television-Radio-Film Department at Syracuse University. During his career at Syracuse he taught Sound for Picture; Music Recording; Music Underscoring; Advanced Audio for Radio, TV, and Film; Production Aesthetics; Broadcast Writing; and Criticism. Before joining the TRF faculty, he worked in radio and television as producer, writer, sound designer, performer, and station manager in a number of markets, including Philadelphia, New York, and Boston. He also has many film and recording credits and continues to be professionally active in audio production and as an author. Alten is an internationally recognized authority in sound production. He is author of AUDIO IN MEDIA, the leading audio production text in North America for three decades. It has been translated into Spanish, Korean, German, and Chinese. He has also written AUDIO IN MEDIA: THE RECORDING STUDIO, which focuses on music recording, and many articles for the FOCAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ELECTRONIC MEDIA: TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNIQUES, for which he served as Audio/Radio Editor, the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF RADIO, for which he served on the advisory board, and was an audio editor for WORLD BOOK ENCYCLOPEDIA. He has also been a contributor to the INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EDUCATION. Currently he is writing AUDIO BASICS, a primer. Alten has been recognized by WHO'S WHO and honored for teaching excellence by the Outstanding Educators of America, Alpha Epsilon Rho, and the National Science Foundation.

I haven't found, for my purposes, a better general guide to the recording studio anywhere. What particularly pleases me is that Mr. Alten offers essential insight into analog technology and practical acoustic principles, and treats digital technology as a vital progression but not as the be-all and end-all of the present and future of audio recording.

This is a fine book but it makes little sense to buy this softcover book, when you can purchase the hardcover book it's based on, Audio In Media (ISBN: 0534548040), for an additional eight dollars list.

The hardcover book covers more subject areas including broadcast video production. I use this as a textbook for my entry-level Audio Production courses at Mercy College. One key feature missing in the softcover edition is the end of chapter summary, entitled "Main Points." I tell my students to start the chapter by reading these first--then reading the chapter.

For the minimal difference in price, I'd buy the hardcover version (and as I write this today, Amazon's price for the hardcover is actually cheaper!).
