More About the Author

Sound designer Jay Rose was born in New York City in 1948, and grew up in that area. He went to college in Boston, fell in love with the city (and with a Boston girl), and has been there ever since... except for a brief foray to Ohio for grad school.

He's taught at Emerson College and Berklee College of Music, managed a classical music radio station, written ads and collateral for clients including Adobe, IBM, Bose, and Motorola, and designed software for some standard digital studio gear... but his first love has always been audio production. In fact, the first line of his resume says "My whole career has been about telling stories with sound, or telling stories about sound."

Jay currently works out of a fully-equipped, multi-room audio postproduction suite in his home... where his clients have included MGM, PBS, Turner, and CBS. But he also makes time to work with indie and low-budget documentary producers, when he likes the film and the subject.

Ask him to summarize his career, and he uses one word: "Lucky". He's been lucky to have some great mentors along the way (including Wavy Gravy and Dr. Tony Schwartz), and to have had a hand in every aspect of film production and audio engineering. He writes about sound for film and video as a way to pass along what he's learned.

Jay is a member of CAS and former section officer of AES. His tutorial articles are at www.JayRose.com, and his latest book is at www.GreatSound.info.

Most books on Audio Post are practically useless. Some of them amount to no more than a rambling collection of memoirs. Others just discuss basic job descriptions. Occasionally, you'll ind a book that gets into more technical details, but mostly reads like a how-to manual on Pro Tools.

This book is the most refreshing and informative book I have found yet. Not only does Mr. Rose get into great detail about specific techniques, but he does it in a non-application specific way. I doesn't matter if you use Pro Tools, Nuendo, Logic, or even a hardware based audio system. His tips transcend each platform and tech you how to really get something done. (as it should be)

So if you already know what a compressor, eq, etc is and how to use them, and you want to read about some suggestions on new way HOW to apply them- get this book.

Ever after 10 years, I learned some new stuff. (and was reminded of things I forgot!)

I have the first edition of this book and decided to buy the second as well. There are a few thing Jay Rose added to this book that were not in the first edition. This book and also Rose's "Producting Great Sound for Digital Video" are well organized, clearly written and have greatly helped my understanding of how to deal with sound both in production and post. He goes into much detail regarding postproduction manipulation of sound. I constantly refer to these books.

I bought the kindle version of this book, AUDIO POST PRODUCTION FOR FILM AND VIDEO. The book supposedly comes with an audio CD - very important, since this is a book about audio - but I can't find a link to download this CD anywhere in the kindle version of the book!!!

I feel extremely cheated as there is so much reference to the CD in the text.

This book is very well-written, practical, and informative. I've been involved in broadcast audio in one form or another for over 20 years, and the only other books I've seen on this subject have been "textbook" style... in other words, they were written to be used along with a professor in a classroom situation. While Jay's book would certainly work well in a class, it works equally well on its own, i.e., you don't need a professor to get the most out of this book. He also understands that people reading this aren't going to have access to a $500K post facility. I'm not saying that good (aka expensive) tools don't make the job easier, but Jay points out ways to get the job done for less whenever possible.

While I've got a lot of experience in broadcast, not much has been in film, and this book has helped me a great deal to expand my market. If you're into this sort of thing, you should definitely buy a copy. Brian Gilbert, [...]

As a self-taught videographer and phonographer, I cannot stress how excellent this book is!

As an author, I wish I could write technical information like Jay Rose.

If you are interested in improving your audio on any project, this book is worth twice the price!

Highly, highly recommended.

Let's face it, you can have the best video in the world but if the audio is awful everyone will cringe. I bought this after reading a copy of the Author's other book Producing Great Sound for Film and Video, Third Edition (DV Expert Series)and attending a conference where he taught a session. The Author, Jay Rose, is a guru on the subject and best of all he loves to share his knowledge. The book is technical in nature and I love technical subjects. However, Jay Rose writes in a style that is easy to read. The author states that he wrote the book with students and beginners in mind. Although the book mainly focuses on post production it does cover basic audio information. For one example, there is a discussion of what digital means versus analog. Although I studied video and audio production in college, I believe anyone could learn a lot from this book with no background in audio. The book includes a CD with clips so that you get a greater understanding of the material. After reading the book you will have the knowledge it takes to fix many goofs made during production and you will be wise so that you don't make them again. The book is not software or computer platform specific and you will learn editing techniques that will help you no matter what you use in the future. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand audio, editing audio, and to have better productions.

In this book, Jay Rose does an excellent and thorough job of describing Post Production considerations and workflow to prepare audio for Film and Video. What I like about Jay's writing style, is that he really is mentoring the reader. The reader gets the feeling that Jay wants you to understand the workflow and why certain tools and work flow approaches are more appropriate for a given situation. A CD with pre and post processed audio is provided with the book. If you really want to get the most out of Jay's books, you will work along through the exercises on the CD using your DAW. He will start with a problem clip and go on to process it in several different forms. If you can work through and eventually duplicate his processing techniques and resulting sound, you will come away with an excellent understanding and feel for the concepts he describes.

This book is really the second in a series of two. You should really start with "Producing Great Sound for Film and Video", also by Jay Rose and follow on with this book. Both books are now on my shelf as serious references and highly recommend working through both of them. Each book contains an audio CD as well.
