A friend of mine who is a recording engineer recommended I get this one to go with a Technics turntable (sl-5 linear tracking, p mount only) rather than the Shure someone had put on it. I was hesitant because of the lack of reviews online and the price point. I thought it was too cheap to be really good. I have to say its the best thing I could've gotten. My main musical interest is rock, and some of it gets really hard and heavy. This cartridge makes music really come alive. The bass is full, without overpowering, all of the musical details are crisp and clean. Its dynamic, warm, spacious, vibrant! I haven't felt vinyl in a long time. I could totally feel it with this. I just can't believe that its so underrated. Well, maybe that keeps it nice and affordable.

I bought this cartridge because my stylus needed to be replaced and the combination stylus and cartridge were just a few dollars more so I figured what the heck even though my old cartridge still works fine. I own a 20 some year old Technics SL-BD20D turntable and originally had the AT6006 cartridge with a 0.3 x 0.7 nude bi-radial stylus. This cartridge, the AT311EP with a 0.3 x 0.7 bi-radial stylus, seemed to be of similar nature to the AT6006. I do not notice any perceptible difference in sound quality between the old and new cartridge. This cartridge and stylus seems to perform just as well as the cart that I was using and the connection fittings were perfect. Bottom line: I am very happy with this purchase.

Update 04-20-12. The stylus just fell off the plastic mount. AT must use some really poor quality glue because I have only been using the stylus for about a month and have probably only played it for about 10 to 12 hours. It sounded great before it broke! So I would rate the cartridge a 4 and the stylus a big zero.

This cartridge will work just fine on MOST turntables using the 1/2" mounting adapter. On those that have an issue of the bottom of the cartridge body hitting the record surface. . . it is usually because the turntable had no, or very poor VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) adjustment. Also, this cartridge has a pretty high "compliance" so even when tracked at 1.25g to 1.5g, it rides pretty low as the tracking force compresses the rubber cantilever pivot quite a bit. This is not unusual and some other more costly cartridges have stylus assemblies that also ride very low to the record surface. The high compliance contributes to it's excellent sound.

There is a very simply solution I have used. To remedy this, all you have to do is cut out a small piece of "cereal box cardboard" shim in the form of a little rectangle or trapezoid shape, about 3/8"x 3/8" in size. I use the trapezoid shape. You can then mount the cartridge, but do not tighten the screws all the was on the 1/2" mounting adapter. With the adapter mounting screws loose, you simply slide the tiny piece of cardboard under the front edge of the 1/2" black mounting adapter enough to lower the front edge down a bit. This essential tilts the front down and rear of the cartridge up a bit. You can experiment and see how much you need to slide the cardboard under the mounting adapter, then tighten the screws. Try it then on a record and usually you will see you have a perfect angle with no bottoming. Very rarely, you may have to use two layers of cardboard "shims" to get te good Vertical Tracking Angle.

I've used this cartridge on 7 turntables so far. Only one needed the "shim" under the front. It depends on your cardige head and some turntables are designed to "stack" records or need a thicker mat. check if your turntable HAS the proper mat thickness that was original. If not. .. . vertical tracking angle is off.

No makers I know about are producing a turntable that has a P-Mount tone arm. For legacy turntables that require a P-Mount/T4P cartridge along with a record collection in excellent condition your choices for something better than a "starter" cartridge in the $25 to $70 range continue to dwindle. Many major cartridge makers have eliminated all but their lesser P-Mount cartridges while others like Ortofon stopped making any T4P (P-mount) cartridge at all. The AT-311EP is possibly the best sounding P-Mount cartridge still widely available at a price that about anyone can afford. This AT311EP is not the best T4P/P- Mount cartridge ever made or even the best one still available at any price but in the price range it performs way beyond the cost. (If you have more money to spend the Grado Black T4P is $75 and the Gold Grado T4P is something over $200. The AT311EP specs approach the Grado Black for way less money.)

Audio-Technica actually recently listed this AT311EP as "discontinued" on their website, so I thought those in the supply chain were all there would be. The ATN3472SE replacement stylus is safe since the AT92ECD uses the same stylus and that cartridge was not discontinued. Then came good news that for some unknown reason Audio-Technica changed their mind so the AT311EP webpage no longer carries the "discontinued" stamping as of 04/04/2015. So the AT311EP has been snatched back from the jaws of death. Very unusual for a discontinued product to make a comeback, but I'm glad and it was a good save.

The AT311EP is better than even other AT cartridges that look cosmetically identical, such as the AT92ECD, which costs a few dollars less. The others are cheaper but the extra few bucks for the AT311EP is a good investment.
