I now own this AT4050, a much needed piece in my mic locker, one I was recommended by so many producers for years.
I relied on my Neumann U87 which is the standard studio mic many are looking to record their voice with or at least when they come to a studio want to try it. I personally believe the Neumann is a lot of name and less versatility and there are many better sounding mics at a lower price range. I own condensers like the RodeNTK, AKG C214, Shure KSM44A, and a few ribbon mics Royer 121 and 122 great for instruments and face directly in front of an electric guitar amp. I also have a Shure SM57 and SM58, less bright and rather a bit dark but punchy and able to withstand noise and louder performances and its application can range from a "live sounding performance" recorded in studio for lip sync at a concert (normal rule) few sing live, instead record a different version of their song with dynamic mic that sounds (live), with introduced noise and leaving few errors on purpose to go lip sync it to a crowd, and that is something that the AT4050 should not be used for, it delivers such clarity and brightness it does not sound like dynamic mic, neither do many of the condensers I mentioned previously.

Everything else, the AT4050 does it all, it sounds great for male, female, drums, guitar, even in front of a GUITAR AMP!! it picks up pristine bright sound and basy enough to pack the punch many are missing. This is the perfect mic for pop and r&b, rock singers sound amazing and many salsa, bachata singers seem to just SHINE with it too. MANY RADIO HITS HAVE BEEN MADE WITH THE AT4050
This mic is able to pick up ALL AROUND as it has dual diaphragm and comes with three patterns.
You will want to sing in the studio with CARDIOID, so it picks up only on the front side.

I've been using this microphone for years. I have two of them, actually. I didn't buy them as a matched pair, so one is a bit brighter sounding than the other. That can be an advantage, as I use the darker mic for overly bright sound sources, and vice-versa. I've used these mics with good results in my project studio, on vocals, guitars, and hand percussion, and actually earned a major film festival award for music I created in that studio. I think the mics sound particularly good on female voices (as a number of reviewers have noted). The figure-of-eight pattern offers the flattest response curve, and I almost always use that for vocals. (The cardioid and omni pattern give more treble/upper mids boost--useful for some applications, but a little harsh on my voice.)

Bottom line: This is a well-made, versatile microphone that will do pretty much anything you ask of it.

This microphone has great resolving power and produces a wonderful neutral but detailed recording of almost anything it is pointed at. This model is also multi patterned and very versatile. It blends well with th AT4033a as well as the Shure SM81. Highly recommended if you are looking for a faithful recording that does not provide significant coloration. Construction is first rate with a black finished solid brass body and excellent electronics and workmanship throughout.

Buying microphones is really tough. This could be a fantastic mic for someone else in another location on a different voice, guitar, etc. Unfortunately for my purposes, it seemed rather flat and required a lot of EQ to get anything out of it.

I did do some research prior to purchase and this is a well respected mic, so would not eliminate it from consideration based on a single review.
