I have a big head and the 700's fit perfectly.

You can drive them to acceptable volume levels without one but the bass is a bit sloppy and uncontrolled if under powered.

Sonically, these compare very favorably to the Grado 225s.

I think my search is over! I have a pair of Grado 60s, a pair of Grado 225s, and a pair of Sony MDR7506s. I also have a pair of $50 Denons, but those are just so I don't have to let just anyone use my good cans. The Grados have great sound, but are just one step away from medieval torture when it comes to comfort. The Sonys are very comfortable, but lack in sonic quality - they are very good, don't misunderstand, but they are definitely not Grados.

Enter the Audio Technica ATH-AD900. To begin with, let me describe the earpieces. They are not just large they are huge - humongous, even. Giant Mickey Mouse Ears sliding down on your head. That is about it for the negatives, and that is only a negative if you are vain, or plan to wear them in public. The design of the suspension system is unlike any other brand out there, and Audio Technica only shares it with the AD700s. There are two vinyl covered wires that provide all the 'squeezing' tension that holds the phones against your ears. They do not squeeze any more than is absolutely necessary because, unlike other headphones, these wires do not have to hold the phones in place vertically on your head. That job is accomplished by a pair of 'floating paddles'. And, because these 'paddles' do not have to squeeze against your head, they are equally comfortable. There is no provision for adjustment, but I found none was needed. It is safe to say that you have never, ever worn a pair of headphones as comfortable as these. I have worn them for as long as ten hours straight with absolutely no discomfort. They may look a little delicate, but I sat on them (accidentally, of course) and they suffered no damage. So they are both comfortable and durable.

Now, for the sound. They are very neutral.

I love these headphones. They are so comfortable that when I'm in my house I put them on even when I'm not hearing anything, just because I'm used to having them on. I think that there have been days where I use them for 12 hours or more.

The soundstage is great. The sound is great. I won't extend on that regard. But yhey leak a lot sound. If you share a room and like hearing music loud you may not want to get them.

I have owned a lot of headphones. I am not audiophile enough to feel qualified to speak intelligently about sound quality but they seem to have incredible sound stage and represent the entire spectrum of sound well. However, while the sound is fantastic, the base doesn't really punch. I sometimes break out my old Grado headphones when I want something more aggressive on the low end.

These are amazingly comfortable, unlike other cans I have used (especially the Grado). In fact, it is the comfort I think that makes them stand out more than anything.

I am using these with a Creative X-FI Fata1ity Professional soundcard. I bought these after owning the AD700's for about a year and the upgrade was worth it IMO. I am not too familiar with Audiophile terminology but for gaming I will say that these have outstanding positioning and provide a very good separation in sounds for things such as footsteps. Compared to the AD-700 the sound is richer, fuller and provides better separation between footsteps and gunfire. With the X-FI chip this is a really really big advantage in hearing ememys approaching in close quarters. I tried these with Dolby headphone on an Asus DG card and the Asus card sounds like complete garbage compared to X-FI. I mean Dolby Headphone literally makes you think you are playing inside of a tin can. That was with a DG card though, maybe a higher end Asus card would do better but I do not care to even try one because I believe Dolby Headphone is the culprit, and inferior to CMSS. The new Recon 3d reportedly isn't on par with X-FI either according to some Audiophile's.
