I've used several different BOSE headphones and I've tried different Beats headphones, but in terms of accurate sound and bass, nothing comes close to the ATH-WS99. You will hear the emphasis on Bass as soon as you start using these, but it is not overwhelming Bass like the Beats, its just the right amount to give your music some depth and presence. BOSE headphones have no bass compared to this pair. After I used this pair and tried out my BOSE headphones, the music sounded flat and I could not hear any of the fine details in my music. The best part about the ATH-WS99, is that they focus on Bass but they do not neglect the other frequencies, I can still hear the fine details in the music. I can hear musicians counting down, or taking breaths. For best results, I would recommend keeping your music library in high quality files, like ALAC or FLAC, not mp3s. I also use a portable headphone amp, (FiiO E17 Alpen). Just a fair warning, if you do not like Bass in your music, then these are not the headphones for you.

Introduction

First off, I'd like to thank the folks at Audio-Technica for the sample of the WS99 for review.

Here it is, the pinnacle of Audio-Technica's "Solid Bass" line of portable headphones, the WS99. Arriving in a big, audacious black box, the WS99 makes its presence known with its sharp (literally) aluminum accents, its large but not heavy construction and promises of excellent bass and sound quality. Jumping into the premium price bracket, with an MSRP of $250, sending it into direct competition with the Beats by Dre Studios, the original consumer focused portable headphone and, frankly, fashion accessory. So, does the WS99 measure up as a suitable king of the Solid Bass hill and make a solid case for your cash? Read on to find out.

Accessories: The WS99 includes two interchangeable cables. The first cable is a standard extension and the other features a built in microphone, sliding volume control and one button remote.

Design and Build Quality: At the top of the Solid Bass food chain, the WS99 is a hefty and beefy portable headphone that feels heavier and more solidly built than the WS77. The detachable cables are nicely built and feel durable.

Comfort: The WS99 is actually quite comfortable with its bigger and slightly softer pads. Despite the fact that I don't particularly love on-ear headphones, I found the WS99 to be quite comfortable over long periods.

Isolation: The WS99 isolates well for a non-circumaural headphone, despite the fact that the WS99 is semi-open.

Sound Quality

Burn in: These were given 100+ hours of burn in prior to review. A lower treble spike I noticed early on mellowed out over time.

I would give these headphones 5 stars, but the one of speaker swivels in my first order became very loose in just one week of use. For $200 dollar headphones, I expected much better built quality. The swivels on my replacement pair, however, did stay snug for the first few months. Unfortunately, the left swivel did become more and more loose over time. After further inspection, it turned out that a simple Philips screw is the only things holding the speaker to the frame. Although it's a bit inconvenient, this is easily fixed using a small screw bit and thick piece of paper or cloth to prevent scratches. As expected, the tightened speaker swivel will continue to get loose over time. If you don't want to do deal this with this problem, definitely avoid these headphones.

I am able to wear these headphones for hours on end, but during and at the end of every listening session, my ear are sometimes left hurting. Although these may be not be the most comfortable headphones at first, they do become more comfortable as you use them.

Although these are the first headphones I have ever owned, I am really impressed by the amount of bass they deliver, especially when using an amplifier, and how it still fails to overshadow all the other frequencies in music. I am very satisfied by the ATH-WS99's sound quality and clarity. At my time of purchase, these headphones were $190.

I've owned the Sennheiser HD600 and also the ATH-M50 by Audio Technica. For everyday listening, I would choose the WS99. Best bass I've heard on any headphone, without compromising mids and highs. Compared to the M50, there is no comparison. Not only does it deliver better bass at all spectrums without compromising the mids and highs, it is also much lighter and more comfortable to wear, not to mention more aesthetically pleasing. Although an amp is not needed, as they already sound great without one, but with my FiiO E12, I am able to experience a whole new level of sound. I've also tried them with the E11, which has more than adequate enough power to drive them bring out more sound, but the E12 is just simply better. The WS99 and E12 combo just keep on sounding better and better the more hours I put on them.

Purchase without hesitation! Amp not needed, but I would highly recommend the E12. With the amp, it is literally like having a very crisp subwoofer in your ears while delivering great mids and highs
