Introduction

First off, I'd like to thank the kind folks at Audio-Technica for providing a review sample of the CKS1000.

Yes, this is it, the final and entry into the Solid Bass lineup, the most expensive and (hopefully) best sounding CKS earphone of them all. Retailing for $250, the CKS1000 is far beyond what many would consider "impulse buy" territory and entered the realm of a rather significant investment. It also runs against some significant competition at this price point so it will have to offer a competitively detailed quality of sound to be worth its price over its competitors.

So, does the CKS1000 have what it takes to stand out or is it destined to be lost in the crowd? Read on to find out.

Accessories: Inside the rather lavish packaging are four pairs of silicone eartips, a set of manuals a leather carrying case and two audio cables that, much like the WS99, attach just below the y-split. One is a standard audio-only cable and the other includes a built in remote and microphone with volume adjustment.

Design and Build Quality: The housings of the CKS1000 are plastic and similar to the CKS99 but feature a few nicer accents to differentiate it from the lower end models. Overall, the earphones seem nicely built with sturdy cables and black plastic housings with a soft touch feel and a rubberized ring around the edges where the housings come into contact with your outer ear.

Comfort: Like its siblings, the fit of the CKS1000 could be a point of contention for some but I was once again pleased with the fit of the CKS1000 as it was mostly unobtrusive for me over long periods. The driver sat in my outer ear nicely without exerting any unpleasant pressure.

Isolation: These isolate well for a vented dynamic IEM.

The sound is amazing. I have yet to burn them in yet but these blow my Bose In-Ear headphones out the water. Especially if you buy a Fiio E11 or E17. Base is much smoother and highs are much clearer compared to the 50-100 headphones. The rubber that goes into your ear canal fits snug and blocks out almost every noise you can hear from home to your commute or wherever you are heading. Quality of headphones feels great. Only small downside i possibly could see is the wiring is very standard and not very sturdy. I wish they came braided or something.

To keep this nice and short, list of pros and cons:

Pros:
-Great controlled bass that adds "substance" to music
-Can still hear the highs, mids, and lows clearly (lacking a bit of mids, to be expected)
-Great build quality and feels solid
-Music sounds rich and feels substantial (YOU CAN "FEEL" YOUR MUSIC)
-Microphone picks up voice well, sounds clear according to people I've talked to
-Great selection of tips (chose smallest size for my small ears)
-Looks good despite odd shape

Cons:
-A bit uncomfortable for me small ears (ear hurts after an hour or two)
-Concerns for odd shape (can hook on to things if not careful)
-Microphone can pick up other sounds besides your voice (to be expected)
-Took me a while to learn putting it on (minor con)

Overall great for people looking at add substance and richness to music.
Can be uncomfortable for smaller ears.
Pros far outweigh cons.
Well worth the purchase.

These headphones are simply okay out of the box, but part of the journey (the fun part) is burning them in. The people over at head-fi say that they really start to shine after 200+ hours (!!!!) of burn in. After 20 hours of burn-in I can already start to notice a difference. Currently I don't have an amp or DAC so I couldn't really say how well they handle with a neutral source or if they need an extra push to be driven, but my computer and Galaxy S4 work just fine, these would probably sound far better with a DAC/amp, but those aren't really in my budget right now.

The sound of these things is outright addicting, they have punchy bass that does not overwhelm the mids or highs, although I will admit it does bleed into the lower end mids though. The ear tips these come with aren't awful but replacing them with Auvio tips from Radioshack definitely helped the sound quality, since the stock ones do not have a wide enough opening.

If you couldn't tell from the picture these are relatively, but not excessively, large headphones. And no, they are not the end all of comfort for in-ear headphones, although they are not uncomfortable. As for isolation, they are incredible if you can get a good seal (which is not hard); I can't even hear the person next to me talking, or the TV 10 feet away from me.

I mainly listen to rock and alternative, guitar sounds great with these. For just around 150 dollars from amazon these are a no-brainer.

These are great for every genre of music! Of course they are great for electronic and hip hop, Three 6 Mafia/Project Pat sub-bases are silky smooth and mercilessly powerful, and the kick drums fire off with sniper rifle precision. Kick drums in classic rock are astonishing! These have the ability to "slow move", to push a lot of air with slow vibration of the diaphragm (like vintage speakers where you can actually watch the woofer move back and forth). Bass guitars and fiddles have a wonderful textured and detailed mid-presence, that doesn't mask much or any of the other instruments. Basically the bass is perfect in every way!

Like I said in the title, these are great with Beethoven. The mids are very dry, coupled with fluid bass and treble, I can hear bows on strings, I can hear breath in woodwinds! I'm hearing mid-detail in cymbals I've never heard with ANY sound system! The soundstage is the BIGGEST I've ever heard in ANY set of headphones, which is obviously good for symphonic stuff. The bass presence is a little pervasive for classical, but not too bad and it helps define the massive size of the soundstage.

All of these factors carry over to classic rock very well. Listening to Steely Dan with these is like a brand new divine Steely Dan experience!

I love these the most with heavy metal! In Metallica's "...And Justice for All" album I can actually hear mid-detail in the distorted guitars (much to the chagrin of James Hetfield's efforts). In Devildriver songs I can...hear detail! Great band but too fast/sophisticated for most sound systems to pick up much of anything; they can only get a gist of what Devildriver is doing, these earbuds capture almost everything!

In doing head-to-head comparisons I've found that these sound a lot like my vintage Beyerdynamic DT 990 600s. Not quite as much detail but better clarity, and otherwise it's practically a 1-1 comparison.

Okay I'm done.
