Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-CKS99 In-ear Headphones

The ATH-CKS99's Solid Bass technology utilizes an exclusive Double Air Chamber System. In addition to the main air chamber that houses the driver, the earpieces have an additional chamber that operates in conjunction with a specially shaped housing to control and focus the air flow produced by the driver movement and expand its bass output.

In addition, the ear tips of the ATH-CKS99 are designed for maximum bass response, with a movable two-position post that lets wearers adjust the ear tips for the best fit, sound isolation and low-frequency performance.

Introduction

First off, I'd like to thank the folks at Audio-Technica for providing a review sample of the CKS99.

Up for review is the mid-range entry into the Solid Bass line of in ear monitors from Audio-Technica, the CKS99. So, without further ado, let's get right to it, shall we?

Accessories: The CKS99 comes with four pairs of silicone eartips, a set of manuals and a leather carrying case.

Design and Build Quality: The housings of the CKS99 are plastic and similar to the CKS77 but feature a few nicer accents to differentiate it from the lower end model. Overall, the earphones seem nicely built with sturdy cables and black plastic housings with a soft touch feel to them around the edges where the housings come into contact with your outer ear.

Comfort: Like the CKS77, the fit of the CKS99 could be a point of contention for some but I was once again very pleased with the fit of the CKS99 as it was quite comfortable for me over long periods. The driver sat in my outer ear nicely without exerting any unpleasant pressure.

Isolation: These isolate very well for a vented dynamic IEM.

Microphonics: A tad unpleasant at times but nothing excessive.

Sound Quality

Burn in: The CKS99 was given 50+ hours of burn in time prior to review and no significant changes were detected.

Like the CKS77, the CKS99 features prominent bass, a clear but recessed midrange and prominent treble. To go into further detail on the sound signature and the ways in which it improves over its sibling, let's start at the bottom.

The bass is big and full with slightly more emphasis on the midbass than sub bass and merely okay extension.

I had the Audio-Technica ATH-CKS55 in-ear model for a long time. The problem I found with those headphones is that they broke fairly easily. I workout everyday on an ergometer so the headphones see constant sweat and motion while in my ears. I would like to lie and say they stay put in my ears, but they really do not. I have to adjust them every so often because they slip out of my ears. That being said, I am still giving this headset five stars. It is unrealistic to expect any set of headphones to stay put in your ears, so I expect some looseness in that regard.

However, the audio quality of these headphones entirely makes up for any slippage during workouts. The audio quality of these headphones is a problem - a problem for this reason: once you listen to these headphones, every other set of in ear headphones sounds horrendous. It makes gaming, listening to EDM and other "high-impact" audio activities very engaging. The audio quality of these headphones literally BLOWS away any competition, especially given the price. I've tried many sets of in-ear headphones (Klipsch, Bose, Beats) and these are by far the best set ever. Listening to audio through this headset is immersive, and you can hear every detail of the songs.

Now I'll be honest. I'm not an audiophile, I have no interest in these headphones for their minute technical advantages. I wanted a pair of headphones that makes the music come alive in my ears, and these headphones accomplish that. I've bought over three pairs of the CKS55's and I have absolutely no intention of migrating away from this form of headset anytime soon.

TLDR: Amazing audio quality, immersive sound, but don't expect to do karate with these headphones and still have them in your ears after you are done.

These are really fun earphones, the bass is huge and accurate and it doesn't overwhelm the rest of the music. It is only there when the song calls for it. It sounds warmer and has less clarity compared to the ATH-M50, but it has less recessed mids. Another thing I found they do better than the m50 is they give a better sound stage and better separation of multiple vocals and instruments in a song. Great value, they look a lot better than I was expecting too.

I play bass at church and plug these into a Behringer Powerplay P16 and these work really well for hearing myself and the rest of the band. The bass is very rich, but the key is getting a great seal. For normal music listening, I usually find myself EQing the highs down quite a bit because they are a little too much for my tastes. I love the little leather storage case that comes with them as well, nice for transport. Overall though, for the price I paid ( I waited til they went on sale ), i'm very pleased.

I like Audio-Technica headphones. I have a pair of ATH-M50S (the straight cord) phones and use them daily.

I wanted to move up from my UE200s and read countless reviews on the internet which gave conflicting views on just about every model of earphone out there. Then it dawned on me; if I already trust a company for good sound, why not just take the plunge and go with them.

When these arrived they had the middle sized buds on. I tried the phone on and the sound wasn't good and they didn't sit well - they would ease out of the ear. After reading I found that there are two seatings for a bud. So I took the bud off and pushed it back on on the outer seating. WHAT A CHANGE! They sat comfortably and the sound was way better. In subsequent testing I tried the slightly smaller bud [there are four bud sizes], where the sound went lighter and the phones felt a little loose. So I tied the larger buds. That's me. The sound is full and the buds are comfortable and don't move. I'm not a very big person but obviously some parts of me are larger than average. Ahem.

One of the most unexpected findings is how much the Equalizer settings change the heard music. With the old UE200s each change of setting just seemed to vary the mediocrity. Now there is a very clear and obvious change in sound with every change of setting in a computer/MP3 player EQ.

The size of the units had me wonder when I first saw them advertised. Thankfully they have no problems in wearing, and the clever angled design makes them sit and feel great.

The phones are not noise isolating. This was also something I wanted so that I could be reasonably aware of the world around me.
