Others have provided bad reviews for these speakers based on poor frequency response. We are only talking about a speaker capable of handling 60 Watts but when you hook them up to a bookshelf stereo you are going to get bookshelf stereo sound.
I bought 5 pairs of these speakers for my whole house audio (WHA) based on nothing more than reviews and price. Now mind you, I have these hooked up to a very high quality Denon receiver with 2x110 Watts driving all of the WHA speakers. I am MORE than satisfied with the sound of these little marvels. Come on, under 30 bucks a pair when the closest comparable in-ceiling speaker from Best Buy or similiar would be 150 bucks a pair. I am extremely happy with my purchase, the speakers look beautiful in my ceilings and I feel the sound is more than adequate for WHA speakers. They will never be played at high volume levels and should not be expected to. While installing these I had them playing music and you could easily hear the boost in bass level once installed in the ceiling (acoustic baffle is the attic). Don't expect these to be your main speakers for your home theater, that is not what they are designed for. But if you want some speakers perfect for background music for a VERY good price ... these are for you!

I have these installed in my 7.1 surround system and do not use them for anything more than surround but I am happy with the output I've heard from them.

Bought and then returned these for larger speakers that could produce lower bass. OK clarity, midrange was fine but as the only speakers in the room they didn't produce enough lows for my taste.

I bought these speakers to go with other Audiosource speakers I bought last year. The model is slightly different, but I thought they are a great value for the money. I have not been disappointed.

I used these for my whole house audio. They sound very good for the price. I would order these again if I needed inexpensive speakers that seem to have good quality. I don't know what these would be like in a home theater setup, but they are great for getting quality sound into all areas of your home.

I'm looking into returning these things just a few minutes after opening the box.
I plugged them into my bookshelf stereo and everything sounded horrid. I'm no audiophile, my bookshelf stereo is a $150 unit, and I'm pleased with it. I don't expect bass out of these ceiling speakers, but I honestly had a hard time getting any sound out of them at frequencies lower than 1000 Hz. I had to put my ear inches from this speaker to tell that it was on at lower than 300 Hz, and I noticed serious attenuation of sound until well over 1000 Hz. It sounded like I was only getting about half the sound out at 600 Hz. It seemed to keep up just decently above 2000 Hz, though I didn't test too much at the high end. The advertised range for these speakers is clearly very far off. I don't think that this problem could be fixed with a sub woofer. These speakers simply suck. Even at $15 apiece. methodology: I used the program "NCH tone generator" to play specific frequencies through my PC into the stereo and out to my speakers. Left to one of my bookshelf speakers, also 5.25", right for one of these audiosource ceiling speakers. By switching the balance back and forth on the stereo to play either my bookshelf speaker or this new one, I could detect a very serious volume drop at all frequencies below 1 kHz, getting worse as it got lower, and almost complete silence below 300 Hz. |
